Job Summary

The Principal Software Engineer will serve as a key liaison between Finance business stakeholders and IT teams to support the implementation and optimization of SAP S/4HANA Finance solutions. This role involves analyzing business requirements, designing functional solutions, and ensuring successful delivery of SAP Finance modules including FI/CO, Asset Accounting, and Real Estate Management (RE-FX). The engineer will provide subject matter expertise in finance processes and S/4HANA configuration, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and compliance standards.

Role is based in Washington, DC, Wilmington, or Philadelphia. 

Essential Functions
  • Partner with Finance stakeholders to gather, document, and validate business requirements for S/4HANA Finance implementation.
  • Configure and support SAP FI/CO modules (GL, AP, AR, AA) and related submodules, ensuring accurate financial reporting and integration.
  • Lead functional design for Asset Accounting and RE-FX processes, including lease accounting and real estate management.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to ensure proper integration between SAP Finance and other enterprise systems.
  • Develop functional specifications for enhancements, interfaces, and reports; oversee testing and user acceptance.
  • Provide guidance on best practices for S/4HANA Finance, ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Support data migration activities, including validation of financial data and reconciliation.
  • Maintain updated documentation for processes, configurations, and system changes; deliver training to end-users as needed.
  • Drive solution design workshops with Finance leadership to align system capabilities with strategic goals.
  • Provide oversight on system performance, ensuring scalability and optimization of S/4HANA Finance processes.
  • Mentor junior consultants and engineers, fostering knowledge transfer and building internal SAP expertise.
  • Act as a key escalation point for complex finance system issues, ensuring timely resolution.
  • Collaborate with audit and compliance teams to ensure system controls meet SOX and internal audit requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • Plus 7 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Asset Accounting and Real Estate Management (RE-FX) processes.
  • Proven ability to translate business requirements into functional solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • Plus 9 years of relevant work experience.
  • CPA or equivalent finance certification.
  • Experience with SAP integration to third-party systems.
  • Familiarity with SAP Fiori apps and S/4HANA simplifications.
  • Strong understanding of lease accounting standards (ASC 842/IFRS 16).
  • Experience with Central Finance (CFIN) in S/4HANA.
  • Exposure to Group Reporting and consolidation processes.
  • Hands-on experience with SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) for financial planning and reporting.
  • Knowledge of Treasury and Cash Management modules.
  • Prior experience in large-scale global rollouts or multi-country implementations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Deep functional expertise in SAP FI/CO, Asset Accounting, and RE-FX.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills; ability to articulate complex processes clearly.
  • Experience working in Agile or hybrid project environments.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver under deadlines.
  • Strong stakeholder management and ability to influence senior leadership.
  • Proven track record of delivering SAP Finance solutions under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to balance technical depth with business process understanding.
  • Familiarity with emerging SAP technologies (e.g., SAP BTP, AI/ML integration with Finance).
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to guide cross-functional teams.

The salary/hourly range is $124,600.00 - $161,352.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
