What is a day trader?

A day trader is a stockbroker who focuses on buying and selling stocks to capitalize on market gains at the end of the day on behalf of customers. They focus on both short- and long-term increases to a stock portfolio or account. Day traders work primarily in the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street but can also operate remotely. They keep a close watch on market conditions and make purchasing decisions accordingly. In most cases, a day trader completes a transaction cycle over the course of a single day, hence the name. Day traders don’t just trade stocks; they also trade bonds and options.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a day trader?

To thrive as a Day Trader, you need a solid understanding of financial markets, strong analytical skills, and often a background in finance or economics. Proficiency with trading platforms (such as MetaTrader or Thinkorswim), charting software, and sometimes FINRA Series 7 or 63 certifications are typically required. Exceptional discipline, decisiveness, and stress management skills help individuals adapt quickly and make sound decisions in volatile markets. These competencies are crucial for minimizing risk, capitalizing on market opportunities, and sustaining profitability in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.

What are some common challenges faced by day traders in managing risk, and how can they address them?

Day traders often face the challenge of managing rapid market fluctuations and controlling emotional decision-making under pressure. Effective risk management involves setting strict stop-loss orders, limiting the amount of capital exposed per trade, and adhering to a well-defined trading plan. New traders may struggle with discipline and overtrading, but developing a consistent strategy and regularly reviewing performance can help mitigate losses. Additionally, staying updated with market news and maintaining a balanced routine help reduce stress and improve long-term success.

What is the difference between Day Trader vs Stock Broker?

AspectDay TraderStock Broker
CredentialsNo formal certification required, but licenses like Series 7 may be beneficialRequires licensing (e.g., Series 7, Series 63)
Work EnvironmentSelf-directed, trading from home or trading floorsOffice setting, client-facing roles
Industry UsageActive trading, investment speculationFacilitating client investments, sales
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on independent trading strategiesFocus on client service and sales

Day traders actively buy and sell securities within the same trading day, often working independently. Stock brokers, on the other hand, assist clients with buying and selling stocks, typically working for brokerage firms and requiring licensing. While both roles involve securities trading, day traders focus on personal profit through quick trades, whereas stock brokers focus on client service and sales.

How much does an average day trader make?

The average day trader's earnings vary widely, with many making between $20,000 and $50,000 annually, while experienced traders can earn six figures or more. Success depends on skills, risk management, capital, and market conditions, and day traders often work full-time hours using trading platforms and technical analysis tools.

Job Summary
We are seeking a highly driven, commercially sharp, and organized Sales Manager to lead and strengthen our team of Traders. This is a frontline sales leadership role focused on managing people, improving execution, and driving a more unified sales strategy across a fast-paced trading environment.
The ideal candidate brings strong sales management, food industry, commodity, produce, protein, brokerage, or wholesale distribution experience and knows how to lead revenue-producing teams in dynamic markets. This person will coach Traders, improve accountability, create better structure around sales execution, and help ensure the team is aligned against company priorities.
This is not intended to be an individual contributor or personal-book-of-business role. Instead, this position is designed for a true manager who can elevate team performance, improve organization, reinforce follow-through, and help build a more scalable sales function without slowing down the business.
This role is best suited for a leader who thrives in a high-performance culture, enjoys ambiguity, can operate with urgency, and is energized by a scaling, entrepreneurial food company with a startup feel.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Lead, coach, and manage a team of Traders responsible for customer growth, supplier relationships, pricing, and day-to-day commercial execution.
  • Drive a more unified sales strategy across the team, ensuring alignment around priorities, customer approach, market focus, and follow-through.
  • Improve structure, accountability, and execution discipline across the sales organization.
  • Keep Traders on task by reinforcing pipeline management, customer follow-up, sales prioritization, and activity rigor.
  • Help organize trading efforts across customers, suppliers, categories, and opportunities in a fast-moving market.
  • Monitor team performance and identify where coaching, redirection, or deeper management intervention is needed.
  • Create visibility into sales activity, customer development, pipeline movement, pricing decisions, and execution gaps.
  • Partner closely with leadership to translate company priorities into clear direction for the Trader team.
  • Improve consistency in sales documentation, communication, internal coordination, and execution workflows.
  • Work cross-functionally with operations, supply chain, logistics, finance, and leadership to support commercial success and solve problems quickly.
  • Help standardize sales processes and best practices where needed while preserving speed and entrepreneurial flexibility.
  • Support onboarding, development, performance management, and capability building across the team.
  • Reinforce a culture of urgency, responsiveness, ownership, follow-through, and strong commercial judgment.
  • Use reporting, Excel, sales data, and market insights to support stronger decision-making and better team management.
  • Represent the company professionally at customer meetings, industry events, trade shows, conferences, and networking opportunities as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of sales experience, including meaningful experience leading, coaching, or managing sales professionals.
  • Strong background in one or more of the following (including trading): food sales, produce, protein, perishables, commodities, brokerage, wholesale distribution, agriculture, import/export, or supply chain-driven commercial environments.
  • Proven success managing high-output salespeople, account managers, brokers, traders, or other commercially driven individual contributors.
  • Experience managing teams that own both customer and supplier relationships.
  • Experience improving pipeline discipline, sales process consistency, and team accountability.
  • Familiarity with fast-moving, margin-sensitive, relationship-driven commercial environments.
  • Experience helping scale a growing sales organization without overcomplicating the business.
  • Experience leading in a fast-paced, changing, high-accountability environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive execution, improve follow-through, and create better structure across a sales team.
  • Strong commercial acumen and comfort operating in markets where pricing, supply, and customer needs can shift quickly.
  • Excellent leadership, coaching, communication & performance management skills.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities without losing momentum.
  • Strong Excel and reporting skills; comfortable using data to drive accountability and decisions.
  • Comfortable in a high-performance culture with high standards, ambiguity, urgency, and rapid change.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Full range of benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Company-paid Life and Disability Insurance.
  • 401(k) with a company match.
  • Generous PTO accrual, increasing each year.
  • Free Lunch Daily.
  • Unlimited Snacks & Refreshments.
  • We are experiencing hyper-growth - lots of opportunities for advancement!
  • Base Pay: $120,000 - $180,000
