Job description

Position Purpose:

Reporting to the Sleep Center Manager, Sleep Technicians perform overnight sleep studies to assist in the evaluation and treatment of sleep patient in compliance with AASM guidelines.

Nature and Scope:

Sleep Study Preparation and Set-up

1. Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history).

 2. Determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.

 3. Review the patient's history and verify the medical order.

4. Follow sleep center protocols related to the sleep study.

5. When patient arrives, verify identification, collect documents and obtain consent for the study.

 6. Explain the procedure and orient the patient for either in center or out of center sleep testing.

 7. Select appropriate equipment and calibrate for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary.

 8. Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.

9. Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization.

Sleep Study Procedures

1. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

 2. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download.

 3. Perform patient education and instruction appropriate for out of center sleep testing.

 4. Demonstrate adherence to cleaning and disinfection procedures for portable monitoring devices.

 5. Demonstrate adherence to AASM scoring parameters for OCST; identify artifact, inadequate signals and study failures and generate an accurate report.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.

 2. Perform routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.

3. Maintain current CPR or BCLS certification.

4. Demonstrate computer skills appropriate for the position.

5. Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.

6. Demonstrate appropriate social skills.

7. Demonstrate customer service skills.

8. Demonstrate critical thinking and ability to work with minimal supervision.

9. Demonstrate teamwork skills. Follow HIPAA policies to maintain the privacy and security of patient information.

 10. Demonstrate ability to follow direction.

11. Respond to sleep patient's procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.

 12. Provide patient education utilizing sleep center specific protocols.

13. Adhere to sleep center policies related to quality assurance.

14. Evaluate sleep study related equipment and inventory.

15. Review and evaluate sleep studies and provide feedback to staff.

16. Demonstrate the ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy.

17. Comply with professional standards of conduct.

18. Assist the Sleep Lab Operations Manager in all aspects of sleep center operations

Minimum Qualifications:  Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

Previous Medical Assistant experience preferred.

License(s):

None

Certification(s):

Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
