BZI Steel Painter Day Shift
Job Description
Department Paint Shop
Reports To Paint Shop Supervisor
Schedule Day shift — five 10-hour shifts, Monday–Friday; overtime, weekends, or schedule changes as required
Date August 1, 2026
POSITION SUMMARY
The BZI Steel Painter applies protective coatings to fabricated structural steel to BZI and PDS standards, working a 10-hour day shift in an indoor production setting. The role owns the full coating process at the gun: preparing and evaluating the work, applying coatings efficiently, and verifying quality through wet-film and dry-film thickness testing and visual inspection. Painters also maintain their own equipment — pumps, guns, and hoses — calibrate and document DFT testing daily, and wear required PPE at all times. Success in this role means consistent coverage the first time, accurate inspection records, safe judgment before every task, and the flexibility to adjust as production requirements change.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Equipment Handling & Maintenance — Maintain and perform preventative maintenance on paint pumps, paint guns, and paint hoses.
· PPE — Wear and maintain proper PPE while painting (respirator, respirator filters and pads, safety glasses, ear plugs).
· Maintaining Safety — Evaluate all actions and duties prior to performing them, in the safest and most efficient way possible.
· Applying Coatings — Apply coatings effectively and efficiently to BZI and PDS standards.
· Test Inspection Records — Calibrate the DFT reader daily; perform three tests daily per project per painter.
· Inspection and Quality — Inspect during and after applying coat with WFT and DFT for visual inconsistencies and insufficient coverage.
· Collaboration and Teamwork — Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure workflow efficiency.
· Reacting to Changes in Productivity — Adjust to new requirements or changes in the production process.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· Extended standing and walking — Ability to stand and walk on concrete or industrial flooring for most of a 10-hour shift, with scheduled breaks.
· Material and equipment handling — Frequently lift and carry items up to 35 pounds and occasionally team-lift or use approved mechanical assistance for items up to 50 pounds.
· Postural demands — Frequently bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, and work in awkward positions while coating structural steel and servicing painting equipment.
· Hand and arm use — Sustain repetitive gripping, squeezing, and controlled arm movements while operating spray guns, hoses, tools, and inspection instruments.
· Mobility and access — Safely climb stairs, ladders, and approved work platforms; maintain balance around steel members, hoses, equipment, and designated production areas.
· Visual ability — Possess sufficient near, distance, color, and depth perception, with or without reasonable accommodation, to inspect surface preparation, coating coverage, wet-film thickness, dry-film thickness, and visual defects under shop lighting conditions.
· Respiratory and PPE tolerance — Wear required PPE for extended periods, including a properly fitted respirator, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, protective clothing, and safety footwear.
· Shift stamina and alertness — Maintain safe physical coordination, attention, and productivity throughout a 10-hour shift, including overtime, weekends, or schedule changes when required. Typical work week is Monday–Friday (five 10-hour shifts).
· Communication — Hear alarms and verbal warnings and communicate clearly in a noisy manufacturing environment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Regularly works in an indoor warehouse setting requiring the use of appropriate PPE. May be exposed to varying temperatures due to limited or no heating and air conditioning, with indoor conditions often comparable to outdoor weather. Must be able to safely perform job duties in hot, cold, and changing environmental conditions.
· Environmental tolerance — Work around paint odors, dust, noise, moving equipment, temperature changes, and controlled exposure to coating materials while following ventilation, PPE, and safety requirements.
