Key Routing Specialist Job Responsibilities

  • Schedule: Full time. Monday - Friday 9AM-6PM
  • Route Optimization: Design, maintain, and continuously improve delivery routes to maximize efficiency, productivity, and customer service while reducing transportation costs.
  • Route Management: Create, modify, consolidate, and eliminate routes based on customer needs, delivery volume, geography, delivery frequency, and operational requirements.
  • Customer & Delivery Planning: Coordinate routing for new customers, vendor backhauls, special deliveries, and changing business needs to ensure efficient service.
  • Labor Planning: Balance driver workloads & stop distribution to improve productivity, reduce unnecessary labor, and support efficient scheduling.
  • Performance Analysis: Monitor route hours, labor costs, fleet utilization, and transportation performance metrics to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Tranportation Systems: Utilize Produce Pro, Samsara, and other transportation management systems to develop, analyze, and optimize delivery routes and network performance.

Routing Specialist Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in transportation routing, logistics planning, fleet operations, transportation analytics, supply chain operations, or a related field. Experience utilizing transportation management systems and routing software required.
  • Education (Preferred): High school diploma or GED required. Additional education in Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field is preferred.
  • Licenses: Maintain a valid California Driver License.
  • Transportation & Routing Knowledge: Strong understanding of transportation operations, route optimization principles, geographic route planning, DOT regulations, and Hours of Service (HOS) compliance.
  • Technology and Systems: Proficient in Produce Pro, Samsara, fleet management systems, Microsoft Excel, and other transportation management software. Comfortable analyzing transportation data and generating reports.Supply Chain and Operations: Solid knowledge of supply chain management, budgeting, operations management, inventory control, material handling, and customer service.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical abilities with experience interpreting operational data, identifying trends, and translating findings into actionable business recommendations that improve efficiency and profitability.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prepare reports, present routing recommendations, and collaborate effectively with Transportation Leadership and cross-functional teams.
  • Organization & Time Management: Highly organized with the ability to prioritize multiple projects, meet deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate route metrics, labor costs, cost per stop, cost per mile, revenue per route, net gross margin, percentages, and other transportation performance metrics.
  • Decision Making & Continuous Improvement: Demonstrates sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to solve operational challenges using data-driven decision-making while supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
