JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Substitute Custodian - Indoor
QUALIFICATIONS: (1) Good physical condition; fitness to do manual labor; (2) possess maintenance skills; (3) demonstrates aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities; (4) such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable; (5) capable of lifting up to 65 lbs.
REPORTS TO: Maintenance Supervisor, Head Custodian, & Building Principal
JOB GOAL: To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop
TERMS OF
EMPLOYMENT: As needed
EVALUATION: Annually as established by Board policy
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. During the days in which students are attending classes, clean and maintain a portion of the school as assigned by the Building & Grounds Director or Head Custodian and accomplish the assigned duties during the hours as determined by the immediate supervisor.
  2. On the days that students are attending classes, the custodian will deviate from the assigned schedule as directed by the Building Principal or the Head Custodian.
  3. On days when students are not in school, the custodian shall work at the time determined by the Head Custodian and the Building Principal and shall perform the tasks designated by the Head Custodian.
  4. The specific duties of the custodian include, but are not limited to, the following:
    1. Keep buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean at all times for a safe environment
    2. Shovel, plow, and de-ice walkways and steps as needed to prevent accidents
    3. Mow lawns
    4. Clean assigned classrooms and restrooms thoroughly each day
    5. Clean assigned corridors each day
    6. Scrub, hose down, and disinfect toilet, locker room, and shower room floors daily; clean and disinfect all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily to prevent the spread of germs
    7. Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation
    8. Clean assigned chalkboards/whiteboards on a weekly basis (at a minimum)
    9. Make minor repairs within his/her capabilities
    10. Report major repairs needed to the Head Custodian
    11. Report building damage to the Head Custodian
    12. Assume responsibility for closing the school building every day and determine before leaving that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except for security and safety lights, are turned off
    13. Move furniture, supplies, and equipment within and between buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Head Custodian or the Building Principal
    14. Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste
    15. Perform work from ladders, scaffolds, or hydraulic lift as required
    16. Prepare for and clean after public-use activities of buildings
    17. Operate cleaning equipment as needed (buffers, vacuum cleaners, etc.)
  5. Able to dispose of contaminated materials.
  6. Able to take and understand written and verbal work orders.
  7. Remains on the school premises during school hours and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance required by the supervisor.
  8. Models professional, courteous behavior, attitude, and appearance in all interactions with students, parents, school officials, co-workers, supervisors and the general public.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.
