Datacenter Operations Technician information

What is a datacenter operations technician?

Datacenter Operations Technicians are IT professionals responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and supporting the physical and technical infrastructure within a data center. Their duties include installing and replacing hardware, troubleshooting network and server issues, performing routine inspections, and ensuring that systems run smoothly and securely. They also play a critical role in responding to emergencies, performing system backups, and supporting upgrades or expansions. These technicians work closely with engineers and other IT staff to ensure maximum uptime and efficiency for data center operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a datacenter operations technician?

To thrive as a Datacenter Operations Technician, you need solid knowledge of hardware installation, troubleshooting, and network fundamentals, typically supported by an associate degree or relevant certifications like CompTIA Server+ or Cisco CCNA. Familiarity with data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools, server operating systems, and ticketing platforms is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure reliable uptime, rapid issue resolution, and smooth coordination within the data center environment.

What are common challenges faced by datacenter operations technicians, and how can they be addressed?

Datacenter Operations Technicians often encounter challenges such as managing high-priority incidents, troubleshooting hardware failures under time pressure, and maintaining strict uptime requirements. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial, especially when coordinating with engineers, vendors, and other IT staff to resolve issues quickly. Staying organized and adhering to established protocols helps minimize errors, while continuous learning ensures technicians keep up with evolving technologies and best practices.

Job description

About Zipline

Zipline is the world's largest and most experienced drone delivery service. We are on a mission to serve all humans equally by ensuring access to food, medicine and essential goods anytime, anywhere. We design, build, and operate the world's largest autonomous logistics system, delivering critical supplies quickly and reliably. Today, Zipline operates on four continents, makes a delivery somewhere in the world every 30 seconds, and has completed millions of deliveries to date, including blood, vaccines, medical supplies, food, and retail products.

Our customers include the world's largest and most prominent healthcare systems, governments, retailers, restaurants and global businesses who rely on us to save lives, reduce emissions, increase economic opportunity, and provide delivery from point A to point B as fast as possible. The drone is only 15% of what we've built to enable seamless, reliable, global operations.

Our system strengthens supply chains, reduces congestion, and gives people time back. With more than 140 million commercial autonomous miles safely flown, Zipline is redefining access to healthcare, consumer products, and food across the globe.

We operate at a global scale and are looking for practical problem solvers who thrive on real-world challenges and rapid growth. Our team is motivated by building systems that have a direct, meaningful impact on people's lives and by scaling the future of logistics. We are seeking people who sculpt from first principles, enjoy facing adversity, and can do the impossible at record breaking speeds.

About You and The Role

Please Note: The Zipline SkillBridge program provides transitioning service members the opportunity to gain work experience through an internship during their final 180 days of service. Zipline offers both structured instruction and on-the-job training through a 3-4 month internship.

This is not a general employment opportunity. This role is only open to active-duty U.S. military service members who have been approved (or are eligible for approval) to participate in the DoW SkillBridge program. Applications from candidates who are not SkillBridge-eligible cannot be considered.

Zipline is seeking Ground Systems Technicians who have solid first principles and hands on skills, sound judgment, excellent interpersonal skills and high standards. Success will require attention to detail, a safety-oriented attitude, flexibility, and enthusiasm for installing and maintaining the cutting-edge systems that facilitate our autonomous systems.

What You'll Do
  • Install and commission ground systems and critical infrastructure; ensure quality control of electrical/network components.
  • Diagnose and resolve system faults and basic network and power systems issues.
  • Perform maintenance for uptime reliability; manage IT ticketing and asset accountability.
  • Maintain detailed records and ensure compliance with safety/SOP standards.
  • Contribute to SOP/guide development and complete all required training.
What You'll Bring

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience maintaining mission-critical infrastructure, such as datacenter equipment, power distribution units (PDU), or complex network hardware.
  • Experience in mechanical/electrical assembly, office software, and inventory management.
  • Committed to safety, compliance, and detail-oriented work.
  • Ability to work outdoors, support shifts, travel up to 20% (80% initially), and lift 55 lbs.
  • U.S. work eligibility and valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of network/low voltage systems, general construction, and heavy steel erection.
  • Proficient with material handling equipment (forklift, pallet jack, scissor lift).
  • Ability to read technical drawings and develop novel fixes; OSHA 30.
What Else You Need To Know

SkillBridge start dates are flexible. Housing is not provided.
