Principal Engineer I - Lead Data Engineer

What you'll do:

As a Principal Data Engineer, you will serve as a Subject Matter Expert in the Enterprise Data & Analytics domain, as well as in adjacent areas, ensuring that data engineering solutions are safe, secure, compliant, and reliable. You will be responsible for designing, building, and implementing critical components of the enterprise data platform, aligning with the strategic data and analytics objectives of Western Alliance Bank. In this role, you will identify development and support requirements and take ownership of large, complex design initiatives, playing a crucial part in supporting project deliverables.
  • Desing, develop and deploy data engineering solutions with Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, and Azure DevOps to support Western Alliance Bank's regulatory reporting and LFI strategy.
  • Develop data engineering solution designs that can be handed off to data engineering teams for execution, ensuring the reuse of components wherever feasible to maximize efficiency.
  • Develop ETL and data pipeline capabilities considering how data is created, transformed, stored, archived, analyzed, and shared across Western Alliance Bank and our partner systems.
  • Implement Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines for all data solutions in adherence to Western Alliance Bank technical standards.
  • Apply Test Driven Development methodology to all data solutions designed, built, and implemented.
  • Lead the implementation of outcomes, recommendations, and designs from Data Governance and Enterprise Architecture.
  • Lead the migration of multidimensional cubes to tabular models, optimizing data architecture for enhanced analytics and performance.
  • Utilize Power BI to design, deploy, and visualize tabular cubes, ensuring seamless business intelligence integration and actionable insights.
  • Perform data exploration and data profiling with tools such as Excel and Informatica.
  • Actively participate in making data architecture decisions.
  • Provide technical mentorship to team members and other data professionals.
  • Collaborate with product owners and business stakeholders to gain a working understanding of business requirements and operational processes.
  • Implement built-in quality and compliance- by-design in all data solutions.
  • Implement methods to include unstructured data and big data.
  • Review Azure Data Factory pipelines, Synapse artifacts, and other scripts developed by data engineers and provide feedback to ensure all deliverables meet quality standards.

What you'll need:

  • 8+ years' experience with data engineering specifically in Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) concepts and processes, enterprise data warehouse capabilities, database principles, and other related tools and technologies; preferably strong to expert in Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, and/or Databricks.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field; Masters or MBA in related field preferred.
  • 3+ years' experience designing, implementing, and supporting cloud data solutions; Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Services, Azure Synapse, Azure Logic Apps, and Azure DevOps experience strongly preferred.
  • Previous leadership experience required.
  • Expert level experience with at least one RDBMS and query language such as T-SQL, PL/SQL, Spark SQL.
  • Expert level experience in conceptual, logical, and physical data design.
  • Certifications within Azure such as Azure Fundamentals, Azure Data Engineer, Azure Data Scientist, and/or Azure DevOps Engineer preferred.
  • Familiarity with data science and analytics tools such as SAS, Tableau, Power BI.
  • Familiarity with multi-cloud data management and transformation platforms or tools such as Databricks, Snowflake etc.
  • Experience in Agile, SAFe, and/or Scrum preferred.
  • Experience integrating with data quality, data catalog and data lineage tools preferred.
  • Advanced to expert knowledge of general Financial Services or Banking preferred.
  • Advanced to expert knowledge of applicable regulatory and legal compliance obligations, rules and regulations, industry standards and practices.
  • Advanced to expert experience in leading cross-functional teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously with an established expertise in one or more key domains of the bank (Deposits, Loans, Operations or Reporting) with the ability to walk-through top-level process design. Capable of collaborating with regulatory partners like the CFPB, OCC and FRB through audits and collaboration efforts as situations arise.
  • Advanced to expert familiarity with the capability model across IT and the applications and infrastructures available for engagement in solutioning across the bank to develop results that leverage existing capabilities in addition to implementing innovative solutions when required. Experience in the design, enhancement, and compliance to all governance frameworks across the IT organization to ensure proper compliance with published procedures and standards.
  • Advanced speaking and writing communication skills.
