What is the difference between Databricks Architect vs Data Engineer?

AspectDatabricks ArchitectData Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and implementing data solutions on Databricks platformBuilding, maintaining, and optimizing data pipelines and infrastructure
Skills & CertificationsDatabricks certifications, Spark, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), SQLSQL, ETL tools, cloud platforms, programming (Python, Scala)
Work EnvironmentData platforms, cloud environments, collaboration with data teamsData pipelines, databases, cloud infrastructure, scripting

While both roles work with data and cloud platforms, a Databricks Architect primarily focuses on designing and implementing data solutions using Databricks, whereas a Data Engineer builds and maintains the data pipelines and infrastructure that support these solutions. The Architect often oversees the technical design, while the Engineer handles the day-to-day pipeline development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Databricks Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Databricks Architect, you need strong expertise in big data engineering, cloud platforms (such as Azure or AWS), distributed computing, and proficiency in languages like Python or Scala, typically supported by a relevant degree and cloud certifications. Familiarity with Databricks Workspace, Apache Spark, Delta Lake, and CI/CD tools is crucial for designing and implementing scalable data solutions. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills set top performers apart by enabling effective collaboration and solution delivery. These competencies are essential for architecting reliable, high-performance data platforms that drive business insights and innovation.

What are some common challenges Databricks Architects face when designing large-scale data solutions?

Databricks Architects often encounter challenges such as optimizing cluster performance for cost and efficiency, ensuring data security and compliance across distributed environments, and integrating Databricks with legacy systems or diverse data sources. They must carefully design data pipelines and workflows to handle large volumes of data without bottlenecks, and also collaborate closely with data engineers, data scientists, and IT teams to align on best practices. Staying updated with evolving Databricks features and cloud platform updates is also essential for success in this dynamic role.

What is a Databricks Architect?

A Databricks Architect is an IT professional who designs, implements, and manages data solutions using the Databricks platform, which is built on Apache Spark. They are responsible for creating scalable data pipelines, optimizing data workflows, and ensuring security and compliance within the cloud environment. Databricks Architects often work closely with data engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders to deliver robust analytics solutions that drive business insights. Their expertise helps organizations leverage big data technologies efficiently and effectively.

Job description

Onebridge, a Marlabs Company, is a global AI and Data Analytics Consulting Firm that empowers organizations worldwide to drive better outcomes through data and technology. Since 2005, we have partnered with some of the largest healthcare, life sciences, financial services, and government entities across the globe. We have an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled Databricks Practice Lead to join our innovative and dynamic team.
Databricks Practice Lead | About You
As a Databricks Practice Lead, you are a strategic and hands-on expert in modern data architecture, focused on helping organizations unlock the full value of their data. You thrive in client-facing roles, partnering with executives such as CTOs and CDOs to guide enterprise-scale transformations and platform decisions. You bring deep expertise in the Databricks Lakehouse Platform and its evolving ecosystem, offering clarity to complex challenges including migrations, governance, and AI enablement. You combine technical depth with business acumen, supporting pre-sales engagements by evaluating client needs, comparing platforms like Snowflake and Databricks, and building ROI-driven solution strategies. You lead cross-functional teams without direct reports, mentor others, and ensure solutions are delivered as designed and aligned with strategic goals. You work effectively in dynamic environments, communicate clearly across technical and business audiences, and consistently deliver practical, high-impact outcomes.
Databricks Practice Lead | Day-to-Day
  • Architect and implement scalable data solutions using the Databricks Lakehouse Platform, including Medallion architecture, streaming integration, and ACID-compliant designs.
  • Lead pre-sales and business development efforts by assessing current-state environments, identifying client pain points, comparing technologies, and justifying ROI for tailored solutions.
  • Advise client executives (CTOs, CDOs) on strategic data initiatives, platform evolution, and enterprise-scale architecture decisions.
  • Ensure governance and alignment of delivered solutions with original scope, serving as the escalation point for delivery teams.
  • Collaborate across cross-functional teams, such as engineering, BI, platform, integration, and AI, to drive innovation and data democratization.
  • Mentor and guide data teams, leading discussions and technical delivery without formal people management responsibilities.
  • Stay current on product evolution, including Lakehouse Monitoring, Lake Designer, Delta Sharing, Mosaic AI, and Matrix.

Databricks Practice Lead | Skills & Experience
  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering, solution architecture, or related roles.
  • Hands-on expertise with Databricks Lakehouse Platform and cloud-based data technologies.
  • Experience supporting pre-sales activities such as discovery sessions, technical demos, and proposal development.
  • Strong background in enterprise data architecture, governance frameworks, and scalable solution design.
  • Experience with platform migrations including Snowflake, Informatica, and on-prem systems.
  • Ability to compare cloud platforms pragmatically and provide cost and ROI analysis (e.g., Snowflake vs Databricks) during pre-sales engagements.
  • Proven client-facing skills with the ability to lead strategic conversations and translate technical solutions into business impact.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with a transparent, humble, and adaptable approach.
