What are Databricks Admins?

Databricks Admins are IT professionals responsible for managing and configuring the Databricks platform within an organization. They handle user access, workspace setup, cluster management, security policies, and integration with cloud services. Their role is crucial in ensuring that the Databricks environment runs smoothly, securely, and efficiently for data teams. Admins also monitor resource usage, troubleshoot issues, and implement best practices for data processing and analytics workflows.

What are some common challenges a Databricks Admin faces when managing large-scale data pipelines?

As a Databricks Admin, one of the primary challenges is ensuring optimal cluster performance and resource utilization, especially when handling large and complex data pipelines. Admins must monitor job execution, manage user access, and troubleshoot issues related to data connectivity, cluster failures, or slow-running jobs. Additionally, maintaining data security and compliance across collaborative teams can be demanding, as it requires fine-tuning permissions and enforcing organizational policies. Strong communication with data engineers and analysts is essential to proactively address problems and optimize workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Databricks Admin, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Databricks Admin, you need a solid background in data engineering, cloud computing, and distributed systems, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Proficiency in Databricks platform management, Spark, Azure or AWS services, and relevant certifications like Databricks Certified Associate Developer are typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help in effectively managing resources and supporting data teams. These skills ensure optimal platform performance, secure data workflows, and support for analytics initiatives across the organization.

The Team

Own administration of Informatica Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) and Snowflake to ensure secure, reliable, and cost-efficient data operations. Scope includes org/user/role governance, runtime environments, connectivity, asset migration, scheduling/monitoring, Snowflake RBAC and security, performance optimization, incident response, and automation aligned with data platform best practices.

How you will contribute

  • IDMC Organization & Access Management
  • Administer master/sub-organizations, licenses, global settings, and regional provisioning; implement role-based and fine-grained permissions, user groups, and custom roles per service.
  • Enforce trusted IP ranges, SAML/SCIM where applicable; analyze audit/activity logs and metering reports for governance.
  • IDMC Runtime & Connectivity
  • Deploy and manage Secure Agents, agent groups, firewall/proxy settings, upgrades, and logs across runtime environments (including serverless where appropriate).
  • Configure connectors and connections (e.g., Snowflake, REST, cloud storages), manage dependencies and tracing for integrations.
  • IDMC Asset & Operations Management
  • Govern projects, tags, object-level permissions; implement CI/CD using Asset Management CLI, RunAJob Utility, and source control; orchestrate schedules and blackout periods; perform import/export/bundle migrations.
  • Monitor tasks and performance using Operational Insights; manage alerts and troubleshoot common issues.
  • Snowflake Administration & Security
  • Design and maintain Snowflake RBAC: system roles (ORGADMIN, ACCOUNTADMIN, SECURITYADMIN, USERADMIN, SYSADMIN, PUBLIC), custom role hierarchies, grants, and ownership models across accounts, databases, schemas, tables, stages, and other securable objects.
  • Provision users/roles, enforce least privilege, manage warehouses and resource monitors, and align DAC/RBAC governance for multi-team environments.
  • Performance, Reliability, and Cost Optimization
  • Monitor Snowflake performance and usage; optimize warehouses, caching, and query patterns; support integration with broader data operations (e.g., Databricks/Azure) when applicable.
  • Track IDMC metering/IPU usage and Snowflake consumption; implement controls to balance cost, SLAs, and throughput.
  • Automation & APIs
  • Utilize IDMC REST APIs for org, user, schedule, audit log queries; script Snowflake grants/role/user management and environment setup.
  • Compliance & Governance
  • Support audits, data governance, and policy enforcement across platforms; ensure alignment to organizational security/compliance standards.

Qualifications

Experience

  • 3+ years administering Snowflake (roles, grants, warehouses, RBAC/DAC, performance).
  • Hands-on IDMC/IICS administration across orgs, Secure Agents, connectors, schedules, asset migration, and monitoring.
  • Exposure to integrations in modern data stacks (e.g., Databricks, Azure data services) is a plus.
  • Technical Skills
  • Snowflake security model (system/custom roles, role hierarchies, privileges, ownership), SQL, and administrative tooling.
  • IDMC Administrator service: user/role management, runtime environments, connectors, asset management CLI, RunAJob, Operational Insights, REST APIs.
  • Networking basics for Secure Agents (firewall/proxy), identity integrations (SAML/SCIM), and CI/CD for data assets.

Soft Skills

  •   Cross-functional collaboration with data engineering, analytics, security, and operations teams; strong troubleshooting and communication.

Success Metrics

  • Robust RBAC/DAC enforcement and auditability across IDMC and Snowflake.
  • Stable, performant runtime environments and integrations with minimal incident MTTR.
  • Efficient asset lifecycle and deployment pipelines; predictable schedules and migration outcomes.
  • Optimized compute and metering costs with clear consumption reporting.
  • Preferred Certifications/Training
  • Informatica IDMC/IICS Administrator training (Administration Fundamentals; February 2025 release overview).
  • Snowflake role/access control best practices familiarity; formal Snowflake training or certification beneficial.
