Job description

Summary

The Medical College of Wisconsin is seeking a highly motivated medical student for a Research Fellowship. This intensive fellowship is designed to significantly strengthen applications to competitive residency programs or medical school through high-impact academic productivity, close faculty mentorship, and national exposure within a focused academic environment. The program emphasizes meaningful scholarly contribution, including authorship and presentations, rather than purely observational research.

Fellows will work directly with physician leaders in their chosen area of interest, providing exceptional access to mentorship, career guidance, and the opportunity for strong letters of recommendation from departmental leadership. Expected outcomes include peer-reviewed publications, national presentations, advanced research skill development, and a substantially strengthened residency or medical school application.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Be involved in all phases of research

  • Study design and hypothesis development

  • Literature review and database research

  • Data collection, statistical analysis, and interpretation

  • Manuscript preparation for peer-reviewed journals

  • Abstract submission and preparation for regional and national meetings

  • Participate in department resident didactics

  • Work closely with residents and faculty

  • Observe in department clinics and operating rooms

  • Attendance and presentation at regional and national department meetings

Qualifications

Appropriate experience may be substituted on equivalent basis.

Minimum Required Education:Currently accepted or waitlisted medical student

Minimum Required Experience: No experience

Preferred Experience: Prior research experience (clinical, outcomes, or basic science)

Physical Requirements

Work requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials, standing, or walking continuously.

Work Environment

Occasional exposure to dust, noise, temperature changes, or contact with water or other liquids. Work is performed in an environmentally controlled environment.

Sensory Acuity

Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required. May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.
