Will AI replace data engineer?

AI is unlikely to fully replace data engineers, as their role involves designing, building, and maintaining complex data systems that require human expertise. Instead, AI tools can augment their work by automating routine tasks, allowing data engineers to focus on architecture, optimization, and problem-solving. Skills in database management, programming, and understanding of data workflows remain essential for the role.

What Is a Database Engineer?

As a database engineer, you work to develop and maintain data solutions and information systems for a company in any industry that requires processing and storage of large amounts of information, including healthcare providers or financial service firms. Because you often deal with sensitive data, you must be familiar with appropriate data protection and encryption processes, as well as relevant regulatory frameworks like HIPAA.

What does a database engineer do?

A database engineer designs, develops, and maintains databases to ensure efficient data storage, retrieval, and security. They often work with database management systems like SQL or NoSQL, optimize database performance, and implement backup and recovery procedures to support organizational data needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Database Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Database Engineer, you need expertise in database design, management, and optimization, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with database platforms like MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or SQL Server, as well as experience with tools such as SQL, ETL processes, and relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate) are typical requirements. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with developers and stakeholders. These skills are crucial for ensuring data integrity, system performance, and supporting business operations through reliable data management.

What are some common challenges faced by Database Engineers when working with large-scale databases?

Database Engineers working with large-scale databases often encounter challenges such as optimizing query performance, ensuring data consistency across distributed systems, and managing database scalability as data volumes grow. They also need to implement robust backup and recovery solutions to minimize downtime in case of failures. Collaborating closely with application developers and system administrators is essential to address these challenges and maintain database reliability and security.

What is the difference between Database Engineer vs Database Administrator?

AspectDatabase EngineerDatabase Administrator
Primary RoleDesigns, develops, and implements database systems and solutionsMaintains, monitors, and manages existing databases for performance and security

Future duties and responsibilities
Database Vulnerability Remediation
. Own end-to-end remediation of database vulnerabilities across Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and IBM Db2 platforms applying patches, configuration hardening fixes, and encryption updates within defined SLA windows.
. Triage database-specific vulnerability findings from the vulnerability management platform, assess risk against asset criticality and business impact, and commit to remediation dates in the POAM.
. Identify false positives and risk acceptance candidates for database findings that cannot be remediated within standard SLA windows, preparing justification documentation for information security sign-off.
. Coordinate with the centralized triage function to ensure database vulnerability records are accurately classified and routed before they reach the execution queue.
Configuration and Hardening
. Remediate database configuration vulnerabilities default account removal, unnecessary privilege cleanup, weak authentication settings, insecure network listener configurations, and audit logging gaps across production and non-production environments.
. Apply database encryption fixes, TLS on database connections, data-at-rest encryption gaps, and certificate rotation for database server communications.
. Maintain and update database security baseline standards across all supported platforms, ensuring configurations remain compliant with enterprise security policy following each remediation cycle.
Access Control and Credential Management
. Remediate privilege escalation vulnerabilities at the database layer reviewing and revoking excessive DBA permissions, cleaning up orphaned database accounts, and enforcing least-privilege access aligned to enterprise IAM standards.
. Own database credential rotation for service accounts and application database users flagged in vulnerability scans coordinating with the secrets management platform to ensure credentials are rotated within approved vault workflows without application disruption.
. Support quarterly database access reviews validating that application service accounts, DBA accounts, and shared credentials comply with least-privilege standards and flagging violations for remediation.
Change Management and Deployment
. Prepare Method of Procedure documentation for all database-level remediations that require change advisory board review detailing the fix approach, rollback plan, testing steps, and business impact assessment.
. Coordinate with application teams and platform teams to schedule database remediation deployments within approved change windows, ensuring downstream application connectivity and query performance are validated post-remediation.
. Lead pre-production database remediation testing validating that patches and configuration changes do not break application connectivity, stored procedures, or job scheduling before production deployment.
Collaboration Across Crews
. Work closely with Java Developers, .NET Developers, and Middleware Admins in the App, Data and Middleware crew on vulnerabilities that span the application and database boundary specifically SQL injection remediations, JDBC connection pool vulnerabilities, and database-driven application security fixes.
. Coordinate with the Container and TRC crew on Hikari DSP configuration propagation items that overlap with database connection management.
. Support the Sr. Security Engineer on access control and CyberArk credential management work at the database layer the DBA owns the database-side execution while the Security Engineer owns the governance and vault integration design.
POAM and Reporting
. Maintain accurate POAM records for all database vulnerability findings updating remediation status, dates, and closure confirmation in the vulnerability management platform following each fix deployment.
. Submit database vulnerability items for rescan after remediation is confirmed, validating that the CVE no longer appears before marking the POAM record closed.
. Contribute to weekly SLA burn-down reporting providing database vulnerability status, overdue items, and upcoming remediation commitments to the Delivery Manager.
Required Qualifications:
7+ years of database administration experience in enterprise production environments Oracle and SQL Server specifically, both platforms not just one
