Job description

The VA NOC defends, manages, and monitors the network operating status and cyber security posture of the VA by providing the day-to-day management, operation and configuration of the enterprise network infrastructure, Internet Gateways, the delivery of enterprise security systems and services, the monitoring and reporting of security incidents, the conduct of threat and vulnerability analysis, the validation of adequate security controls within the enterprise and the full range of functions across the spectrum of activities relating to incident management, incident response and enterprise network management.
Seeking an advanced MSSQL for 1st shift, full time work at the VA's Network Security Operations Center (NSOC) in Martinsburg, WV, working for Service Design and Implementation and Portal Services.
  • Install, configure, harden, patch, upgrade, maintain, and administer production and development MSSQL 2022 SQL instances.
  • Perform logical and physical design, performance monitoring and tuning, troubleshooting, capacity planning, database backup and recovery, and query optimization/tuning.
  • Configure and maintain SQL Agent jobs, server audits, and SSIS packages.
  • Configure and maintain Always on Availability Groups.
  • Work closely with developers to design, develop, implement, and maintain new applications using MSSQL 2022.
  • Write, debug, and maintain Power Shell scripts to automate administration tasks.
  • Harden SQL instances per DISA, FISMA and GOV Best Practice STIGS.
  • Configure and maintain Transparent Data Encryption and Secure Socket Layer Encryption.
  • Configuring and administering MongoDB.
  • Excellent writing, communication, organizational, and troubleshooting skills.

Responsibilities
Implements and maintains smooth operation and physical design of databases. Conducts performance tuning of indexes and databases in general. Reviews database design and integration of systems, provides backup recovery and makes recommendations regarding enhancements and/or improvements. Maintains security and integrity controls. Formulates policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management, and monitors transaction activity and utilization. May develop stored procedures and/or triggers.
  • Administers a variety of database systems, such as Microsoft SQL Server, and other Database Management Systems (DBMS).
  • Develops and enforces database administration and user standards and procedures; audits, modifies, and amends data in systems using SQL commands.
  • Oversees the scheduling of database projects, database and transaction log backups, notifications, and database replication between multiple SQL Servers and remote sites.
  • Assists Database Designers/Information System Analysts in the development and creation of SQL and Web-based databases and database systems.
  • Reviews technical designs, reports, documentation, and other materials produced by staff; creates and maintains high-level reporting systems using products such as Crystal Reports; researches and implements new database and online technology.

Qualifications
Education and Background Investigation
  • Education / Experience: Bachelor's degree in computer science, electronics engineering or other engineering or technical discipline is required with 8+ years of experience. 5 additional years of relevant experience may be substituted for education.
  • Background Investigation: Must be able to pass a government Tier 2 Moderate Background Investigation

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience administering SQL instances with policy-based management.
  • Install, configure, patch, and upgrade MSSQL
  • Experience with configuring SQL server Integration Service, Reporting Services reports.
  • MCSA: SQL 2016 Database Administration Certification
