Job description

Department:                     Department of Subways 

Location:                           130 Livingston Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Position Title:                   Civil/Structural Inspections, Emerging Talent Intern

Hourly Rate:                     $19.00 (Undergraduate), $21.00 (Graduate)

All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location.

OVERVIEW OF DEPARTMENT:

Protection of the subway structures through annual inspections, planned repairs, preventive maintenance and capital investment is essential and critical to NYCT's operations. MOW Engineering supports In-house forces and Capital Contracts with inspections, maintenance, and repairs of 240 route miles of elevated, viaduct, open-cut, and subway structures and 472 stations to provide safe and uninterrupted train service.

Conduct inspection of structural components with senior engineers to ensure the structure is safe for service. Design of Steel columns and beams, concrete slabs and walls. Preparation of sketches on MicroStation for temporary shoring and permanent small repairs. Review the field inspection reports and update the EAM defect database accordingly. Conduct punch list inspections for capital contracts with senior engineers to confirm the repairs meet the TA standards. Prepare project profiles to bring structures to SOGR. Review design and drawings for capital contracts. Prepare cost estimate for small projects. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct inspections of structural components with senior engineers to ensure the structure is safe for service.
  • Design of Steel columns and beams, concrete slabs and walls.
  • Preparation of sketches on MicroStation for temporary shoring and permanent small repairs.
  • Review the field inspection reports and update the EAM defect database accordingly.
  • Conduct punch-list inspections for capital contracts with senior engineers to confirm that the repairs meet TA standards.
  • Prepare project profiles to bring structures to SOGR.
  • Review design and drawings for capital contracts.
  • Prepare cost estimate for small projects. 

PROJECTS:

  • In-house structural inspections and database management.
  • Joint assessment survey and punch list inspections with senior engineers for capital contracts.
  • Steel and concrete design and sketches for short-term repair. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must.
  • The candidate should possess organizational, analytical and communication skills. 
  • The candidate should be able to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work independently while being an active team player.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least 2.5 GPA AND/OR matriculated in a graduate program in good standing with at least 2.8 GPA
  • Major(s) Preferred: Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or related field.
