What does a database developer contract do?

A Database Developer on a contract basis is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining databases for organizations during a specified project or time period. They create and optimize database structures, write and test queries, and ensure data integrity and security. Contract Database Developers work independently or as part of a team to deliver solutions that meet client requirements, often focusing on tasks like performance tuning, troubleshooting, and implementing new features. Their role is project-based, so they may work with multiple clients over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a database developer contract?

A Database Developer Contractor needs strong SQL programming skills, experience with database design, and a solid understanding of relational and non-relational database systems, typically supported by a degree in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and knowledge of ETL processes, as well as certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with clients and teams. These competencies are crucial for delivering scalable, secure, and efficient database solutions on time and within project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by database developer contracts?

Database Developers on contract often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to unfamiliar database environments, integrating with existing teams, and understanding legacy systems. Since contract roles typically have tight deadlines, contractors must rapidly assess project requirements and deliver solutions efficiently. Additionally, clear communication with stakeholders and in-house developers is essential to ensure alignment on database design, security standards, and performance expectations.

What is the difference between Database Developer Contract vs Database Administrator?

AspectDatabase Developer ContractDatabase Administrator
CredentialsTypically requires SQL, database design, and programming skills; certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator are commonRequires SQL, database management, and troubleshooting skills; certifications like Oracle Certified Professional are common
Work EnvironmentProject-based, short-term contracts, often remote or on-siteOngoing, maintenance-focused roles, usually on-site or hybrid
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare for development projectsCommon in large enterprises, IT departments, and data management teams

While both roles involve working with databases, a Database Developer Contract focuses on designing and building databases for specific projects, often on a temporary basis. In contrast, a Database Administrator manages and maintains existing databases to ensure optimal performance and security on an ongoing basis.

Are database developers still in demand?

Database developers are still in demand as organizations continue to rely on data management and analysis. Skills in SQL, database design, and familiarity with platforms like Oracle, MySQL, or SQL Server remain valuable, especially in data-driven industries and environments requiring efficient data storage and retrieval.

Job description

About ABC Legal Services:
ABC Legal Service is proud to be the national leader in service of process. We are a team of 1000 and growing with offices in Los Angeles, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Brooklyn, Chicago, Washington DC, and more. Seattle is our home and headquarters. We've been successful in this unique business for over 30 years and we continue to advance our technology and business processes to remain years ahead of what our competition is able to offer. Our focus is to expand our technology lead, acquire and integrate less efficient competitors, and tap into new segments through an integrated inbound marketing and sales approach.

Job Overview:
ABC Legal is seeking a Senior Java Developer to help expand the Enterprise team's capacity for high-impact customer and partner integrations. This role is centered on designing, building, and supporting reliable APIs and integration services that connect our platform with customers, partners, vendors, and internal products.

You will work on our public-facing APIs and the backend services that support them. This is an opportunity for a senior engineer who enjoys translating complex business workflows into dependable, well-designed integrations. The work spans Java services, REST contracts, database persistence, security, event processing, and business rules.

What you'll do

  • Design, build, and maintain RESTful APIs used by customers, partners, and internal systems.
  • Extend and support our APIs with the functionality needed for future customer, vendor, and partner integration projects.
  • Develop secure machine-to-machine integrations, including authentication, authorization, API versioning, OpenAPI documentation, and role-based access controls.
  • Build resilient integrations that handle inbound requests, outbound status updates, webhooks, document exchange, and asynchronous processing.
  • Design reliable event-driven workflows using durable processing, retries, idempotency, rate limiting, audit history, and failure recovery.
  • Work with relational databases, including SQL, data modeling, query troubleshooting, indexes, transactions, schema migrations, and persistence frameworks such as MyBatis.
  • Implement and maintain business behavior in Java and Drools rules, keeping rules and service-layer behavior understandable, testable, and safe.
  • Collaborate with product, operations, customer-facing teams, and external technical contacts to turn integration requirements into maintainable technical solutions.
  • Investigate production issues across application code, integrations, rules, and data; identify root causes and deliver durable fixes.
  • Contribute to technical design, code reviews, automated testing, and API/integration documentation.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools, such as Codex and Claude, thoughtfully to improve development speed, investigation, documentation, and code quality.

What we're looking for--The ideal candidate combines strong Java fundamentals with practical integration experience: someone who can build a clear API contract, trace a workflow through database and rules layers, and deliver solutions that customers and partner systems can rely on.

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Technical Field (e.g., Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline)
  • 7+ years of professional software-development experience, with strong production Java experience.
  • Strong experience designing and implementing REST APIs and system integrations.
  • Experience with Spring or Spring Boot, dependency injection, security, and service-oriented application architecture.
  • Strong understanding of API security concepts, including OAuth 2.0, token-based authentication, authorization, secrets management, and secure handling of external payloads.
  • Experience integrating with third-party APIs and managing real-world concerns such as incomplete documentation, retries, rate limits, duplicate events, partial failures, and evolving contracts.
  • Solid relational database experience, including SQL, data modeling, query troubleshooting, indexes, transactions, and schema migrations.
  • Experience with asynchronous or event-driven processing patterns, including Apache ActiveMQ, message queues, background workers, webhooks, scheduled processing, or durable outbox patterns.
  • Experience with Drools or another business-rules engine, or a demonstrated ability to learn and work effectively with rules-based systems.
  • Strong automated-testing discipline, including unit and integration tests for APIs, business logic, and data access.
  • Experience with or willingness to adopt AI development tools such as Codex and Claude as part of an effective engineering workflow.
  • Ability to independently analyze ambiguous requirements, make sound technical decisions, and communicate tradeoffs clearly.
  • Comfort working in a large, established codebase that combines modern and legacy technologies.
