What is a database designer?

A database designer develops computer programs that store data and automate specific tasks. When beginning a project, database designers define the scope and establish the database parameters. Plans may include indexes and constraints that allow users or other designers to access the content easily and implement proper database administration protocols. Designers often work as part of large development teams that include software designers, information technology technicians, and other data scientists.

What does a database designer do?

A Database Designer is responsible for planning, creating, and managing the structure of databases that store and organize data for organizations. They analyze data requirements, design database models, and ensure that databases are efficient, secure, and scalable. Database Designers work closely with developers and system administrators to implement and maintain database systems that support business operations. Their work is essential for ensuring data integrity and supporting the performance of applications that rely on databases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a database designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Database Designer, you need expertise in database modeling, SQL, and a strong understanding of data architecture principles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with relational database management systems (RDBMS) like Oracle, MySQL, or Microsoft SQL Server, and certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional or Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate are valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and translate business requirements into efficient designs. These skills ensure that databases are robust, scalable, and aligned with organizational goals, which is critical for data integrity and business operations.

What are some common challenges database designers face when collaborating with software development teams?

Database designers often work closely with software developers to ensure that data structures align with application requirements. A common challenge is balancing optimal database performance with the flexibility developers need for evolving features. Communication is key, as misunderstandings about data relationships or normalization can lead to inefficient queries or data redundancy. Regular meetings, clear documentation, and the use of collaborative tools help bridge these gaps and result in a robust, scalable database design.

What is the difference between Database Designer vs Database Administrator?

AspectDatabase DesignerDatabase Administrator
Primary RoleDesigns database structures and schemasMaintains, secures, and optimizes databases
Skills & CertificationsData modeling, SQL, ER diagramsDatabase management, security, backup/recovery
Work EnvironmentDesign phase, project-basedOperational, ongoing management
Industry UsageUsed during initial database developmentUsed for daily database operations

While both roles work with databases, the Database Designer focuses on creating the structure and schema, whereas the Database Administrator manages and maintains the database systems on a daily basis. They often collaborate but serve different functions within database management.

Can I become a database designer with no experience?

Becoming a database designer typically requires knowledge of database management systems, data modeling, and SQL, which can be learned through self-study, online courses, or formal education. Entry-level positions may be available to those with strong analytical skills and a willingness to learn, but gaining experience through internships or certifications can improve job prospects.

Job description

About the Role:
Versana is seeking a Database Administrator to partner closely with our engineering and cloud
infrastructure teams. In this role, you'll drive performance optimization and operational excellence across Azure-managed PostgreSQL and Oracle environments-tuning SQL and improving data access patterns in the context of our application architecture and business logic.
You should be comfortable working in modern DevOps and cloud environments using Git, CI/CD,
Helm and Terraform. You will use Datadog for observability, performance monitoring, and alerting
across database and application layers.
Key Responsibilities:
Core Database Administration
Health & monitoring: Monitor database health, performance, and capacity across Azure-managed PostgreSQL and Oracle using Datadog for alerting, SLO tracking, and trend analysis.
Data protection: Own backups, restores, and disaster recovery procedures; regularly validate recovery readiness through testing.
Governance: Administer access controls and user provisioning in alignment with security and financial compliance requirements.
Application Integration & SQL Optimization
Application-centric tuning: Collaborate with developers to analyze and optimize SQL execution paths in the application's data access layer, using Datadog APM traces to pinpoint slow or inefficient queries in production traffic.
Code-level analysis: Read and understand Java code to trace data access patterns and ensure tuning aligns with how the application interacts with the database.
Proactive design partnership: Partner with software engineers and architects during design and sprint planning to shape eSicient relational data models, indexing approaches, and query strategies before features ship.
Root-cause remediation: Identify performance bottlenecks using database monitoring, then work with developers to implement query rewrites and schema adjustments that preserve application logic.
Performance baselines: Establish and track performance baselines for business-critical
queries and implement anomaly detection to prevent regression as new features are released.
Qualifications (Required):
5+ years of experience supporting relational databases (e.g. Postgres, Oracle).
Hands-on experience with Git, CI/CD, Helm and Terraform for database changes, automation, and releases.
Proficiency with Datadog (or similar observability tools) for performance monitoring and alerting across database and application layers.
Ability to read and understand Java application code to trace data access patterns.
Strong communication skills and the ability to partner eSectively with engineering and infrastructure teams.
Hands-on administration of Azure Database for PostgreSQL, including configuration, upgrades, and parameter tuning.
Experience designing and operating high availability and disaster recovery (replication, failover, RPO/RTO), including regular testing.
Strong performance tuning skills, including execution plan analysis (EXPLAIN), indexing strategy, query rewrites, and diagnosing locking/contention.
Experience implementing database security best practices, including encryption, secrets management, role-based access, and audit logging.
Ability to automate DBA workflows using Python, Bash, or PowerShell (maintenance, backup verification, provisioning, alerting).
Comfort participating in an on-call rotation, leading incident triage, and writing post-incident reviews with corrective and preventive actions.
Nice to have:
Hands-on administration of Oracle Database including installation, configuration, upgrades, parameter tuning, and backups using RMAN.
Experience with distributed databases, such as CockroachDB.
Experience managing databases hosted on Kubernetes
