What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Database Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Database Automation Engineer, you need expertise in database management, scripting languages (such as Python or PowerShell), and a solid understanding of automation processes, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with database platforms (like MySQL, SQL Server, or Oracle), automation tools (such as Ansible or Jenkins), and certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate are typically beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring efficient, reliable, and scalable database operations in complex, data-driven environments.

How does a Database Automation Engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

Database Automation Engineers work closely with both development and operations teams to streamline database deployment, management, and monitoring. They often design automated workflows for database provisioning, backups, and updates, ensuring that developers have reliable access to data while minimizing downtime. Collaboration includes participating in DevOps initiatives, supporting CI/CD pipelines, and troubleshooting performance issues alongside other team members. This cross-functional teamwork helps maintain database reliability and supports rapid delivery cycles.

What are Database Automation Engineers?

Database Automation Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, and manage automated processes to streamline database operations. Their primary goal is to reduce manual intervention by leveraging scripting, tools, and technologies such as DevOps pipelines, configuration management, and monitoring solutions. They ensure databases are efficiently deployed, maintained, and monitored for performance and reliability, often collaborating with database administrators and development teams. This role requires a strong understanding of database systems, automation tools, and programming languages.

What is the difference between Database Automation Engineer vs Database Administrator?

AspectDatabase Automation EngineerDatabase Administrator

Job description

The IT Supervisor/Manager –Automation, Generative AI and Custom Development is responsible for the technical leadership and execution of the organization’s automation, custom development, and generative AI initiatives. This includes the review and continuous monitoring of development roadmaps to ensure alignment with the IT division's objectives. The Supervisor ensures that digital products—ranging from the enterprise assistants to robotic automation processes—are designed and delivered to meet established business goals and audit needs where relevant, focusing on code quality, security governance, user experience, and operational scalability. Serving as an interdisciplinary coordinator, the Supervisor works to guarantee efficient project execution across automation developers, data scientists, and front-end engineers. Additional responsibilities encompass technical mentorship, code reviews, making recommendations regarding hiring or changes in personnel status, as well as championing programs for AI literacy. A thorough understanding of automation and front-end development lifecycles as well as modern AI frameworks is required for success in this role.

ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Strategic Leadership – Demonstrate the ability to translate organizational goals into clear development priorities; Anticipates technological shifts in the Generative AI landscape and proactively identifies opportunities to transition from simple chatbots to complex "agentic" workflows; Guides teams in aligning architectural decisions with long-term IT scalability strategies.
  • People Leadership – Builds, develops, and mentors high-performing technical teams (employees and consultants), fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous learning; Provides clear performance expectations, technical feedback, and career development support tailored to individual strengths; Leads with consistency and professionalism, bridging the gap between distinct technical disciplines (e.g., RPA vs. Full Stack Web Dev).
  • Cross Functional Collaboration – Promotes strong relationships with business units (e.g., Land, Finance, Operations) and other IT disciplines to ensure unified solution delivery; Facilitates open communication between the custom development, generative AI and automation groups to prevent silos; Demonstrates adaptability when coordinating across multiple technical stacks and changing project priorities.
  • Decision Making and Judgment – Makes sound, data-driven decisions that balance technical innovation, security governance, and business value; Exercises strong situational awareness, particularly regarding the risks of AI hallucination or automated process failures; Influences decision-making by presenting clear technical trade-offs and architectural recommendations.
  • Operational Excellence – Sets and enforces high standards for software quality, code auditability, and DevSecOps discipline; Drives efficiency by identifying opportunities to reuse code components across the platform and leveraging emerging technologies to solve legacy problems.
  • Communication and Stakeholder Engagement – Communicates effectively with technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring clarity regarding the capabilities and limitations of AI models; Keeps leadership and stakeholders informed of project status, risks, and ROI in a timely and accurate manner; Represents the technology team professionally in internal and external interactions, including with software vendors and contract partners.

COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS

The IT Supervisor must possess a strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite applications, and experience in leading teams using modern development and automation software is key to the role. Additional experience with some or all of technologies below is strongly preferred:

  • Automation: RPA Platforms (e.g., UiPath, Power Automate)
  • Generative AI & Data: Python, LLM Frameworks (e.g., LangChain), Vector Databases
  • Custom Development: JavaScript, React, SQL
  • DevOps/Management: Azure DevOps, Git, Jira

ROLE-SPECIFIC TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Demonstrated ability to apply broad and deep knowledge of software engineering principles, with the ability to guide "hands-on" technical work such as code reviews and solution architecture.
  • Strong understanding of the convergence between Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and Artificial Intelligence, specifically how to architect "Agentic" workflows.
  • Proficient in evaluating and mitigating risks associated with emerging technologies, including data privacy and model governance.
  • Knowledgeable about Oil & Gas business processes (upstream/midstream) to effectively translate business requirements into technical specifications.

EDUCATION:

A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Business, or Information Systems is required for this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 8 years of related industry experience, including at least 2+ years of direct supervisory or team-leadership experience within technology or software development.

  • Proven experience overseeing technical teams, managing developer performance, and guiding professional development.
  • Experience coordinating cross-functional projects and leading technical decision-making processes in an agile environment.
