Job Title: Database Administration
Duration: 12 Months
Work Location: 2 Broadway - MTA Headquarters
Desired Start Date: 9/7/2026
Client: METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY (MTA)
This role is hybrid 3 days on site or as needed. Available locations: 2 Broadway.
Job Summary:
The primary purpose of this position is to design, implement, maintain, tune and optimize all MTA databases to meet current and future software application requirements.
  • Design, implement, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server and Azure Managed Instance databases.
  • Perform SQL server, database installations, upgrades, and migrations.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure team for Patching on a regular basis.
  • Troubleshoot and remediate database-related issues.
  • Ensure database security and compliance.
  • Optimize SQL database performance and query tuning.
  • Develop and implement database backup and recovery strategies.
  • Collaborate with application development teams to support database requirements.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Azure technologies and best practices.
  • Develop and maintain procedures, best practices and standards documentation
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Critical skills:
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience as a SQL Server Database Administrator.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or equivalent experience.
  • Expert knowledge in Windows Server, SQL Server, Azure cloud platform and specifically SQL Managed Instance, Azure Storage account and Azure security fundamental.
  • Experience implementing High availability (Always-on).
  • Strong Knowledge of SQL. Knowledge of Python is preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on logical troubleshooting.
  • Certifications in Microsoft technologies are preferred
Qualifications:
  • Advanced knowledge and familiarity with installing, maintaining and troubleshooting database technology, computer hardware, operating system software and storage area network equipment as it relates to the proper installation and performance of the databases.
  • Advanced knowledge of MTA standard shell scripting used to automate database tasks.
  • Advanced knowledge of general purpose programming languages used to support automation of database tasks.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and support technical issues both remotely and on-site using standard MTA tools and techniques.
  • Ability to read and understand schematic diagrams, technical manuals and documentation such that supported equipment and software can be maintained with minimal training.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.

  • Ability to plan activities and provide advanced technical direction to less senior staff members.
  • Ability to design & engineer solutions and standards.
  • Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related discipline; or a minimum of 10 years experience with programming, systems administration and/or database administration disciplines.
  • Must possess a minimum of 8 years experience installing, maintaining, administrating and supporting, computer hardware, operating systems software (UNIX, LINUX & Windows) and database products such as Oracle and MS-SQL.
Responsibilities:
  • Design and oversee the installation, configuration, and maintenance of database technologies and resources to ensure that all MTA application and systems availability targets are met.
  • Perform database administration tasks including but not limited to defining data process flows, data modeling, data migrations, security and fine tuning database performance.
  • Design, configure and install database software modules and applications.
  • Develop system backup schedules, verification testing and all related documentation requirements.
  • Work with system administrators, network administrators, help desk staff and other IT technical resources to coordinate database infrastructure requirements and analyze / troubleshoot issues as they arise.
  • Ensure all required system documentation and record keeping requirements associated with maintaining and controlling IT assets are completed accurately, timely and in accordance with MTA policies and procedures and department requirements.
  • Participate in the evaluation of new database products and technologies and influence future direction and provide input into the overall impact of introducing the technology in the MTA environment.
  • Guide less senior database technicians and staff in the performance of their tasks.
  • Design, engineer and document solutions and standards to be applied within the IT Department.
  • Contribute to the planning and coordination of tasks associated with database installations, support and maintenance.
