Job description

Are you a developer advocate? A builder passionate about incredible software? Are you excited by AI-assisted development, fast feedback loops, and tools that make hard things easy? We are looking for a Software Development Engineer to help us build the future of how Amazon's networking OS is tested and released. Join us!
Our team delivers software services and infrastructure for the Amazon networking OS. We are a builder tools team: we build tools for other builders. You will build the next generation of our testing ecosystem, one that leverages AI tooling, fast builds, and virtualization to let our builders release the networking OS faster and with more confidence. Instead of waiting on hardware labs and slow validation cycles, builders will get rapid, trustworthy signal from virtualized network topologies, intelligent test selection, and AI-assisted workflows that catch problems earlier and explain them better.
Our goal is improving the developer experience by providing world-class tooling that empowers, enables, and fosters ideas. We champion great engineering practices: we make the right things common, common things easy, and ensure uncommon things are possible. We craft great tools that are simple, intuitive, reliable, and feel nice to use. We reduce friction and increase output for the same input. Above all, customers come to us because we are a strong, high-quality, and dependable engineering org. You will join us to influence, innovate, and raise the bar in this mission.
Our team is seeking a Software Development Engineer to support the following:
- Design and build core components of our testing ecosystem: virtualized network device environments, fast incremental build systems, and AI-powered developer tooling
- Own features end to end, from design through deployment and operation
- Work directly with networking OS builders to understand their release pain points and turn them into tooling that removes friction
- Raise the bar on quality, agility, predictability, and consistency across the developer experience
Key job responsibilities
You will solve complex and ambiguous problems, efficiently and with high quality. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the definition, vision, design, roadmap, development, and operationalization of customer-facing services. You will be given an outcome and the freedom to set the direction based on data driven decisions. You will be part of a startup with the backing of a large company.
You will be a core voice in how this team runs. You will be part of the key decisions: what we build, how we build it, and who joins us. You will help shape the team vision and then make it real, and you will interview and hire for both our team and the wider org. You will also mentor the next generation of software engineers, builders with strong architectural judgment who are amplified by AI. Your job is to help them move fast with AI while keeping the rigor that great systems demand.
A day in the life
Your day starts with the team, not a ticket queue. We plan together, unblock each other fast, and keep meetings light so builders spend their time building. You might spend the morning pairing with an AI agent on a new feature for our virtualized test environments, then jump into a design review for the next piece of our build acceleration work. After lunch you demo what you shipped to the networking OS engineers who use it, hear what still slows them down, and turn that friction into the next thing on the roadmap.
We are a tools team, so our customers sit one door down. Feedback loops are measured in hours, not quarters. You will see your work land in another builder's hands the same week you ship it, and you will feel the difference when a release that used to take days of validation clears in minutes. When you hit something ambiguous, and you will, the team is around you: whiteboard it, prototype it, decide with data, and move.
About the team
We serve many customers and play a critical multiplying role across Networking services. We run very lean and scale with the business, without repeated technical or operational burden. We build the platform that validates the Amazon networking OS: the networking engineers write the tests, and we own the ecosystem that builds, runs, and reports them, from CI/CD pipelines to virtualized network environments to AI-powered tooling. We use Rust, Go, and Python (and many other things) in NAWS, with React on the front end. We own and support services across four verticals:
Product - We own solutions that provide visibility into business-driving metrics, aggregate information, trigger actions, and help leaders manage this domain.
Build and release - We own the CI/CD charter. We push commits through pipelines that compile binaries, build images and debug symbols, run multiple stages of validation, and ship updates to millions of devices across the Amazon network. We aim to simplify and shorten the path from commit to release.
Validation and qualification - Builders use our testing frameworks to validate the OS. We own the tooling for unit, integration, functional, and system testing, plus static analysis (the builders own the tests). This is where our next-generation work lives: virtualized network topologies, AI-assisted testing, and faster feedback loops that raise quality while cutting release time.
Infrastructure - We own and support data center labs with tooling that manages inventory, reservations, capacity auto-scaling, provisioning, recovery, and sanity checks. This is the underlying infrastructure of the ecosystem.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
