Title: Sr. Energy Storage EngineerBasic Function

As a part of the Engineering team, the Sr. Energy Storage Engineer will provide subject matter expertise on Energy Storage design, optimization, final engineering, and construction permitting of utility-scale energy storage projects. The Sr. Energy Storage Engineer will have the ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams. The Sr. Energy Storage Engineer will also have excellent organizational skills, be able to manage multiple projects at once, have excellent follow-through skills, and will have the ability to meet strict deadlines.

Responsibilities
  • Create and maintain Energy Storage engineering standards, technical specifications, and design requirements to ensure quality, reliability, constructability, and cost optimization.
  • Lead technical reviews of utility-scale BESS projects through development, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and handover.
  • Support Engineering and Construction teams by reviewing EPC deliverables and driving design optimization for cost, schedule, reliability, and operability.
  • Develop and review preliminary electrical designs, site layouts, equipment sizing, single-line diagrams, and balance of plant (BOP).
  • Lead technical evaluation and selection of batteries, PCS, transformers, MV equipment, EMS, BMS, SCADA, and auxiliary systems.
  • Review and approve EPC engineering packages, calculations, RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, FAT/SAT plans, and commissioning procedures.
  • Provide engineering support during construction by resolving technical issues, reviewing field changes, and coordinating with EPCs, OEMs, utilities, and AHJs.
  • Lead technical discussions with utilities, AHJs, independent engineers, and code officials to resolve design and permitting issues.
  • Support interconnection studies, system modeling, and compliance with utility, ISO/RTO, IEEE, UL, NFPA, NEC, and local code requirements.
  • Lead commissioning activities, performance testing, substantial completion, and final project acceptance.
  • Visit battery, PCS, and major equipment manufacturers to support technical due diligence, factory acceptance testing (FAT), and procurement activities.
  • Support procurement by performing technical evaluations, developing approved vendor lists, and managing technical bid evaluations.
  • Support Operations & Maintenance teams by providing troubleshooting and long-term technical guidance.
  • Review emerging energy storage technologies and support pilot projects for next-generation storage solutions.
  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert for Energy Storage across the organization.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), with significant experience in engineering, EPC execution, or owner's engineering.
  • S. in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred) from an ABET-accredited university; M.S. and PE license are preferred.
  • Strong experience delivering projects through the complete lifecycle, including engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and commercial operation.
  • Extensive experience working with EPC contractors and resolving engineering, construction, and commissioning issues.
  • Strong knowledge of utility interconnection requirements, permitting processes, and coordination with utilities and AHJs.
  • Experience supporting inspections, code compliance, and resolving AHJ comments through project completion.
  • Deep understanding of lithium-ion battery technologies, PCS, transformers, MV systems, protection and controls, EMS, BMS, SCADA, and plant integration.
  • Strong understanding of applicable codes and standards including IEEE, NEC, NFPA, UL, ANSI, and local jurisdiction requirements.
  • Experience reviewing engineering calculations, protection studies, grounding, short-circuit, arc flash, relay coordination, and commissioning documentation.
  • Experience supporting utility interconnection
