What is a data scientist contract?

Data Scientist contract jobs are temporary positions where professionals analyze and interpret complex data to help organizations make informed decisions. Unlike full-time roles, contract data scientists are hired for a specific period, often to work on particular projects or to provide specialized expertise. These contracts can range from a few months to a year or more, and may be offered through staffing agencies, consultancies, or directly by companies. Contract roles offer flexibility and exposure to diverse industries, but typically do not include employee benefits such as health insurance or paid time off.

What does a contract data scientist do?

As a contract data scientist, your job is to provide independent support to a client for a freelance project or assignment. In this role, you may analyze a database to obtain useful information, use statistics to interpret the results, help identify trends within the industry, and make recommendations about the best course of action. Contract data scientists often help analyze historical data, build or refine templates and dashboards, assist full-time employees, and use predictive modeling to evaluate future company needs. The length of each contract varies, but it's possible to work with the same company for a year or more.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Scientist Contract, you need a strong background in statistics, data analysis, and programming, usually supported by a degree in a quantitative field. Proficiency with tools such as Python, R, SQL, machine learning libraries, and data visualization platforms is typically required, along with knowledge of cloud-based data environments. Excellent problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and strong communication skills help you translate complex data findings into actionable business insights. These skills ensure that contract data scientists can quickly deliver high-impact solutions and integrate seamlessly into diverse project teams.

What are some common challenges faced by data scientists working on a contract basis, and how can they be addressed?

Contract data scientists often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new teams and workflows, managing varying project scopes, and ensuring clear communication with stakeholders who may not have technical backgrounds. To address these, it's important to establish clear objectives and deliverables at the outset, maintain proactive communication, and document work thoroughly. Building strong relationships with both technical and non-technical team members can also help ensure project success and smooth collaboration.

Job description

Data Scientist

The Data Science team helps us fulfill our mission by informing strategy, defining success metrics, and identifying new ways to deliver user value. Data scientists are at the crux of deepening our understanding of the customers and driving more business outcomes by leveraging experimentation, causal inference, statistical and machine learning techniques, and data storytelling. We understand our company’s goals and proactively inform their direction with data so that our product can help more teams do great things.

As a Data Scientist at the company, you’ll help us ask the right questions and answer them rigorously. You’ll work closely with our Product and Business teams to understand their goals and proactively inform their direction with data. You’ll keep taking on new responsibilities as you grow—from defining core metrics to building machine learning models and keeping the data flowing in our pipelines.

This role is based in our Warsaw office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. The standard in-office days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays. Working from home on Fridays depends on the type of work you do, and your recruiter can share more about the in-office requirements.

We offer a Contract of Employment (UoP) for our employees in Poland.

What you’ll achieve
  • Design and analyze experiments to measure the impact of new product features.
  • Investigate high-level questions like “What are the collaborative patterns of the most successful teams using the company?”
  • Add new metrics and aggregations to our data warehouse to make new classes of questions answerable.
  • Build models to predict the growth trajectory of different customer segments.
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders across engineering, product management, and business teams to drive data-informed decision-making.
About you
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Statistics, Engineering, a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of experience applying data science techniques to drive technical product development and decision-making.
  • Strong technical background in statistics, mathematics, information science, or another heavily quantitative field.
  • Fluency in at least one modern language useful for data processing (such as Python or Scala).
  • Proficiency with relational data modeling and SQL.
  • Expertise in statistical methods and experimental design and analysis.
  • Experience with measurement techniques for search ranking, relevance, or quality assessments.
  • Experience with distributed data processing systems (such as Spark or Redshift).
  • Background in advanced statistical modeling (e.g., GLM, mixed effects) and/or machine learning techniques.
  • Demonstrates curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies, with a willingness to learn and leverage them to enhance productivity, collaboration, or decision-making.
What we’ll offer

For this role, the estimated base salary range is between 29,000 PLN - 32,900 PLN (gross monthly). The actual base salary will vary based on various factors, including market and individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process. The listed range above is a guideline, and the base salary range for this role may be modified.

In addition to base salary, your compensation package may include additional components such as equity, sales incentive pay (for most sales roles), and benefits. If you're interviewing for this role, speak with your Talent Acquisition Partner to learn more about the total compensation and benefits for this role.

We strive to provide equitable and competitive benefits packages that support our employees worldwide and include:

  • Generous, transparent, and fair compensation system
  • Contract of Employment (and the option of 50% tax deductible costs for author's rights usage in respect of applicable roles)
  • Health insurance with dental and travel coverage (Lux Med)
  • Meals reimbursement on the days that you work from the office
  • Career growth budget
  • Home office setup budget
  • Gym/Fitness reimbursement
  • Fertility healthcare and family-forming support with Carrot
  • Mental Health Support in Modern Health
  • Group life insurance
  • MacBooks with all necessary accessories
