What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Scientist, you need a strong background in statistics, programming (often Python or R), and data analysis, usually supported by a degree in a quantitative field. Familiarity with machine learning libraries (like scikit-learn or TensorFlow), big data tools (such as Hadoop or Spark), and data visualization platforms is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for translating complex data insights into actionable business strategies. These skills and qualities are essential for extracting value from data, driving informed decisions, and effectively collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by data scientists when working with real-world datasets?

Data scientists often encounter challenges such as missing or inconsistent data, unstructured formats, and noisy information in real-world datasets. Cleaning and preprocessing data to ensure its quality can be time-consuming but is critical for building accurate models. Additionally, data scientists may work closely with domain experts and other team members to better understand the data's context and ensure their analyses align with business objectives. Overcoming these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills and effective collaboration within cross-functional teams.

What is data science?

Data science is an interdisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, algorithms, and systems to extract insights and knowledge from structured and unstructured data. It combines skills from statistics, computer science, and domain expertise to analyze and interpret complex data sets. Data scientists work with large amounts of data to identify patterns, make predictions, and help organizations make data-driven decisions.

What is the difference between Data Science vs Data Analyst?

AspectData ScienceData Analyst
Required skillsStatistics, programming (Python, R), machine learningData visualization, SQL, basic statistics
Work environmentDeveloping models, predictive analytics, researchReporting, data cleaning, descriptive analysis
Tools usedPython, R, Jupyter, TensorFlowExcel, SQL, Tableau, Power BI
Industry usageTech, finance, healthcare, e-commerceRetail, marketing, finance, healthcare

Data Science and Data Analyst roles often overlap but differ mainly in scope. Data Scientists focus on building predictive models and advanced analytics, requiring programming and machine learning skills. Data Analysts primarily handle data cleaning, reporting, and visualization. Both roles are essential in data-driven industries, but Data Science is more technical and research-oriented, while Data Analysis emphasizes interpreting data for business insights.

What Does a Data Scientist Do?

As a Data Scientist, you are qualified to work in such diverse fields as research and development, politics, advertising and marketing, technology, healthcare, government, and higher education as well as multiple others. In general, your duties and responsibilities will be to compile and analyze relevant statistics and turn those numbers into algorithms that reveal insights that can be used by other researchers in their areas of study. Data Science can reveal things like consumer buying habits or the likelihood of success for a course of action. Other duties might vary, depending on your unique field of specialty. Related areas in which a Data Scientist might wish to focus include work as a Data Analyst, Machine Learning Engineer, and Project Manager.

Role
We're looking for a Manager, Data Science to lead a high-impact team working on core marketplace problems. In this role, you'll own measurement, experimentation, and analytical strategy across some of our most important growth, discovery, and ecosystem questions, helping drive durable, profitable GMV across the marketplace.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll manage and develop a strong team of data scientists while also staying close to the work yourself-shaping methodology, raising the quality bar, and helping the company make better product and investment decisions. Depending on business needs and candidate fit, this role may support buyer or seller domains.
  • Lead a team of data scientists working on high-impact marketplace problems across areas such as growth, discovery, incentives, ads, ranking, and ecosystem health
  • Build and operationalize strong measurement foundations, including KPI frameworks, dashboards, diagnostics, and recurring business review rhythms
  • Raise the bar for experimentation quality through better test design, guardrails, observability, and interpretation
  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, Finance, Trust & Safety, and other cross-functional teams on complex marketplace and growth problems
  • Drive analytical strategy for major product and business investments, helping teams understand performance, profitability, and tradeoffs
  • Support work on discovery, personalization, matching, and monetization across evolving parts of the marketplace
  • Improve how teams use data by building scalable frameworks, self-serve analytics, and high-quality analytical assets
  • Help your team adopt modern tooling, including AI-enabled workflows, to improve speed, leverage, and decision-making
  • Manage, coach, and develop high-performing data scientists while hiring thoughtfully as the business grows
  • Nice to have:
    • Experience in marketplaces, two-sided platforms, or live/social consumer products
    • Experience with incentives, pricing, LTV, ads, marketplace health, or ecosystem economics
    • Background in ranking, recommendations, personalization, or growth experimentation
    • Experience building approaches, tools, or methodologies that scaled beyond your immediate team

We offer flexibility to work from home or from one of our global office hubs, and we value in-person time for planning, problem-solving, and connection. Team members in this role must live within commuting distance of our New York, Seattle, San Francisco or Los Angeles hub.
You
People who do well at Whatnot tend to be comfortable figuring things out as they go, biased toward action, and genuinely curious about what they're building. They care more about outcomes than credit and stay close to the product and the people using it.
  • 7+ years of experience in data science, product analytics, experimentation, economics, or a related quantitative field
  • 2+ years of experience managing or tech-leading high-performing data scientists or quantitative teams
  • Strong hands-on foundation in analytics, experimentation, causal reasoning, and statistical methodology
  • Experience supporting consumer product, growth, marketplace, monetization, or ecosystem-focused teams
  • Track record of building measurement systems and analytical frameworks that improve decision quality
  • Strong product and business judgment, with the ability to connect detailed analysis to broader company outcomes
  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguity and adapt quickly as priorities evolve
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including experience working cross-functionally with senior partners
  • Track record of coaching and developing strong individual contributors
  • Enthusiasm for modern data tooling and AI-enabled workflows that improve team productivity

Benefits
  • Flexible Time off Policy and Company-wide Holidays (including a spring and winter break)
  • Health Insurance options including Medical, Dental, Vision
  • Work From Home Support
    • Home office setup allowance
    • Monthly allowance for cell phone and internet
  • Care benefits
    • Monthly allowance for wellness
    • Annual allowance towards Childcare
    • Lifetime benefit for family planning, such as adoption or fertility expenses
  • Retirement; 401k offering for Traditional and Roth accounts in the US (employer match up to 4% of base salary) and Pension plans internationally
  • Monthly allowance to dogfood the app
    • All Whatnauts are expected to develop a deep understanding of our product. We're passionate about building the best user experience, and all employees are expected to use Whatnot as both a buyer and a seller as part of their job (our dogfooding budget makes this fun and easy!).
  • Parental Leave
    • 16 weeks of paid parental leave + one month gradual return to work *company leave allowances run concurrently with country leave requirements which take precedence.
