Title - Technical Project Manager Data Center & Research Infrastructure Migration

Location-Hybrid @ Rochester, NY

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Technical Project Manager to lead the end-to-end migration of specialized research equipment between two enterprise data centers. This role requires a highly organized technical leader with hands-on experience managing complex physical infrastructure migrations, data center operations, and application/infrastructure cutovers with minimal downtime.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of data center facilities (power, HVAC, cooling, rack space, structured cabling, and capacity planning), along with experience coordinating physical and virtual infrastructure migrations. In addition to the primary migration project, the Project Manager will oversee and coordinate two additional research-focused infrastructure initiatives involving data center modernization and AWS cloud services.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional facilitator capable of aligning cross-functional technical teams, vendors, facilities personnel, researchers, and executive stakeholders to deliver projects on time, within scope, and with minimal operational risk.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, execution, and successful completion of a complex migration of specialized research equipment between enterprise data centers.
  • Develop comprehensive project plans, schedules, milestones, budgets, resource plans, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate all phases of physical migration including:
    • Rack and stack planning
    • Power and cooling validation
    • Rack space allocation
    • Structured cabling
    • Network connectivity
    • Hardware relocation
    • Equipment validation
  • Manage infrastructure cutovers involving:
    • Physical servers
    • Virtual infrastructure
    • Storage systems
    • Network connectivity
    • Disaster recovery validation
  • Coordinate migration windows, rollback plans, contingency planning, and post-migration verification.
  • Work closely with:
    • Data Center Operations
    • Facilities teams
    • Network Engineering
    • Systems Engineering
    • Cloud Engineering
    • Security
    • Research scientists and lab personnel
    • Third-party vendors
  • Ensure minimal disruption to ongoing research operations during migration activities.
  • Oversee two additional infrastructure initiatives involving:
    • Research computing infrastructure
    • AWS cloud deployments
    • Hybrid infrastructure modernization
  • Facilitate technical meetings, status reviews, executive updates, and stakeholder communications.
  • Identify project risks, dependencies, issues, and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Track project KPIs, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational standards, change management, and operational procedures.
  • Coordinate change requests through CAB (Change Advisory Board) processes where applicable.
  • Produce executive-level dashboards, reports, and project documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of Technical Project Management experience.
  • 5+ years managing enterprise data center migration or infrastructure transformation projects.
  • Demonstrated success leading large-scale physical equipment migrations.
  • Experience managing complex technical cutovers with minimal downtime.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Data center operations
    • Power distribution
    • HVAC and cooling systems
    • Rack planning
    • Capacity management
    • Structured cabling
    • Physical infrastructure dependencies
  • Experience coordinating:
    • Physical server migrations
    • VMware/virtual infrastructure migrations

  • Excellent facilitation, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience with Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid project methodologies.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project, Jira, Smartsheet, or similar project management tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting research, laboratory, healthcare, pharmaceutical, biotech, or scientific computing environments.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing (HPC) environments.
  • Experience with research instrumentation or specialized scientific equipment.
  • Experience with hybrid cloud environments.
  • AWS Cloud project experience.
  • Experience coordinating data center consolidation or relocation projects.
  • Knowledge of disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
  • PMP certification preferred.
  • Scrum Master certification is a plus.
  • ITIL Foundation certification is a plus.
