Job description

1. Ensures the satisfaction of all users of the department's services both internal and external. This includes developing monitoring programs and continually seeking ways to improve user (i.e. customer) satisfaction.

2. Performs data processing functions to include; non-patient admissions, order entry, cancellation, retrieval and log review.

3. Operates computer system in all assigned functions and implementation of backup systems.

4. Answers the phone, relays messages, provides prompt and accurate information to requesting parties concerning testing procedures.

5. Communicates all relevant information to the technical staff and regarding specimen and requisition adequacy, test add-on, cancellations and test priority.

6. Delivers or mail reports and picks-up requisitions and specimens within the hospital.

7. Verifies in-coming specimens with courier, checks specimens for acceptability and special handling needs and distributes to sections.

8. Prepares specimens for shipment to intra-system sites, reference labs and other institutions; compiles necessary support documentation, makes necessary arrangements for transportation.

9. Checks inventory, orders stock-items and stores upon arrival.

10. Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential.

11. Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the Laboratory team in performing professional service to patients.

12. Maintains work benches, testing areas and other work areas in a clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition for the safety of patients, guests and staff.

13. Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans.

14. Performs all facets of cyto-preparation and post cyto-preparation.

15. Performs preparatory duties in the histology lab to include: filing, sorting, labeling, cover slipping, responding to timers, replenishing reagents, stains and parafin.

16. Assists with frozen sections and in the grossing room.

17. Cleans and restocks Frozen Section Room.

18. Performs glassware cleaning duties and general cleaning (not performed by Environmental Services) as assigned.

19. Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested.

Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers in a manner that reflects Cape Cod Hospital’s commitment to CARES: compassion, accountability, respect, excellence and service.

· Ability to read, write, and communicate in English

· Typing at least 30 words per minute

· Successful passage of Medical Terminology course OR successful passage of the CCH Medical Terminology exam.

· One year work experience as a Clinical Associate, Unit Secretary, FH Lab Assistant, Diagnostic Tech, PST, PSA, PCT, NUC, CNA, Medical Secretary and other positions that require Lab test ordering or Phlebotomy or an Associate or higher degree in Medical/Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Biology, Microbiology, or Chemistry, from an accredited institution.

· Data systems knowledge and demonstration of effective interpersonal communication skills.
