Job Summary
The Student Assistant will support the Department of Mechanical Engineering as a Research Assistant on the Statesboro Campus beginning Summer 2026.
Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period.
Employment is contingent upon funding.
Responsibilities
  • Assists with WAAM experimental setup and operation
  • Supports welding and additive manufacturing trials under supervision
  • Collects, organizes, and analyzes research data
  • Maintains laboratory equipment, tools, and work areas
  • Prepare test samples and assist with post-processing activities
  • Document procedures, observations, and experimental results
  • Assist with CAD models, slicing, or robotic path programming as needed
  • Help prepare reports, presentations, and research materials
  • Follow all laboratory and safety procedures

Shift Specifics
  • Up to 20 hours per week
  • Flexible with schedule of availability

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Education
  • Current undergraduate or graduate student in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, Industrial Engineering, Robotics or related field
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes or laboratory work
  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar)
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Excel, MATLAB, or Python is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment

Preferred Experience
  • Previous experience with problem-solving, troubleshooting, and technical documentation
  • Previous experience with hands-on mechanical aptitude

Proposed Salary
$15.00 per hour
This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.
