What does a data quality manager do?

A Data Quality Manager is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of an organization's data. They develop and implement data quality standards, monitor data integrity, and work closely with data analysts, IT teams, and business units to resolve data issues. Their goal is to ensure that data used for business decisions is trustworthy and meets regulatory and organizational requirements. This role often involves leading data governance initiatives and managing data quality improvement projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data quality manager?

To thrive as a Data Quality Manager, you need a strong background in data management, data governance, and analytical skills, usually supported by a degree in information systems or a related field. Familiarity with data quality tools (such as Informatica, Talend, or SQL), data profiling techniques, and relevant certifications like CDMP are typically expected. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and leadership skills help in collaborating with cross-functional teams and driving data quality initiatives. What are the most common challenges a data quality manager faces when implementing data governance initiatives?

Successfully implementing data governance requires close collaboration with IT, business analysts, and leadership to align on data standards and processes. Additionally, managing change and ensuring ongoing user training are critical, as stakeholders may be resistant to new data policies or tools. Addressing these challenges proactively helps to build a culture of data ownership and accountability across the organization.

  • Establish and enforce data quality and validation processes to ensure accuracy and consistency across all Applied Epic-sourced reports and downstream systems

  • Write and optimize queries (SQL and/or Epic-native reporting tools) to support ad hoc and recurring reporting needs

  • Partner with underwriting, finance, operations, and leadership teams to gather reporting requirements and translate them into effective Power BI solutions

  • Support projects involving the migration, integration, or optimization of Applied Epic data with other business platforms (e.g., finance systems, CRM, data warehouses)

  • Maintain documentation of data definitions, report logic, and dashboard structures to support long-term data governance

  • Stay current on Applied Epic updates/releases and Power BI features to continuously improve reporting capabilities

What We're Looking For

  • Required: Significant hands-on experience working directly within Applied Epic, specifically in data extraction, reporting, and analysis

  • Required: Strong, proven experience with Power BI, including DAX, Power Query, data modeling, and building interactive dashboards from scratch

  • Required: Proficiency in SQL and Power Query (other query languages an asset)

  • A background in Computer Science, Data Analytics, Information Systems, or a related field is considered an asset

  • Proficiency in VBA coding for automation and process improvement

  • Solid understanding of data modeling principles, particularly as they apply to reporting, dashboard integration, and Epic's underlying schema

  • Experience in the insurance or brokerage industry is a strong asset

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a sharp eye for accuracy and detail

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders

  • Comfortable working within Windows-based systems and standard business applications (Microsoft Office suite, etc.)

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects independently in a fast-paced environment
