Data Optimisation information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Optimisation Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Optimisation Specialist, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in data analysis, and a background in statistics or computer science, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with data management tools like SQL, Python, Excel, and optimisation platforms such as Google Analytics or Tableau is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for translating insights into actionable strategies. These skills ensure that data-driven decisions are accurate, impactful, and aligned with business objectives.

What are the most common challenges faced in a Data Optimisation role, and how can I prepare for them?

One of the main challenges in a Data Optimisation role is dealing with large, complex datasets that may have inconsistencies or missing information. You’ll often need to balance improving data quality with maintaining data integrity and system performance. Collaborating across departments, such as IT, analytics, and business operations, is typical, so strong communication skills are essential. Preparing by learning best practices in data cleaning, ETL processes, and familiarizing yourself with relevant tools will help you succeed and adapt quickly.

What is data optimisation?

Data optimisation refers to the process of improving the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of data within an organization. It involves cleaning, structuring, and organizing data so that it can be used more effectively for analysis, decision-making, and business operations. Data optimisation can help reduce storage costs, enhance system performance, and ensure that accurate and relevant data is available when needed. This process often includes data deduplication, compression, and the implementation of best practices for data management.

What is the difference between Data Optimisation vs Data Analysis?

AspectData OptimisationData Analysis
Primary FocusImproving data processes and system efficiencyInterpreting data to uncover insights
Skills RequiredData management, process improvement, technical skillsStatistical analysis, reporting, critical thinking
Work EnvironmentIT teams, data engineering, system optimizationBusiness units, research teams, analytics departments
CertificationsData management, database certificationsData analysis, statistical certifications

Data Optimisation focuses on enhancing data systems and processes for efficiency, while Data Analysis involves examining data to generate insights. Both roles require strong technical skills, but their objectives differ: one improves data infrastructure, the other interprets data for decision-making.

Job description

General Description

At Crane you'll join a fast-growing data organization at a global company operating at the intersection of logistics, optimization, and algorithmic decision[1]making. We're a 3rd-party logistics provider generating massive volumes of data across every category and latency, and need a leader to drive our investment in building the quantitative foundations to manage our core business algorithmically. You will lead a team of data scientists and analysts, owning both the people and the technical direction of data science & optimization at Crane. You'll manage a team of data scientists, set technical standards, and partner closely with business stakeholders to make sure our optimization and forecasting projects are solving the right problems the right way. Your team's work will span pricing, finance, and marketing and growth, with a heavy focus on Operations Research-style optimization. This team is focused on higher level business goals and more consistent business impact than simple truck routing or churn prediction problems.

Essential Job Functions

  • Team leadership and stakeholder partnership
    • You'll work directly with business stakeholders to understand problems, shape measurement and experimental design approaches, and align data science projects with business goals
    • You'll collaborate with other technical functions (Data Engineering, BI Engineering, etc.)
    • You'll ensure that the team follows a well-structured planning process, keeping priorities transparent and execution focused
  • Technical oversight
    • You'll set the standard for how the team works: code reviews, version control discipline, automation, and pragmatic choices about tooling and approaches
    • You'll bring common sense to the technical project lifecycle and modeling choices, always favoring simplicity and reliability
    • You'll guide the team across optimization, experimentation, statistical analysis, forecasting, and ML projects and drive the appropriate level of rigor & care
  • Strategy
    • You'll partner with engineering and business leadership to shape our vision for an algorithmic logistics business
    • You'll connect technical direction (modeling approaches, architecture, and technology selection) to our strategy over multi-year planning horizons
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements

  • Talking, hearing and using hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse and other computer components
  •  Sitting for extended periods of time
  •  Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus

Education & Experience

    • High School Diploma/GED Certificate
    • Track record of successfully delivering mathematical optimization/operations research/industrial engineering projects
    • Experience managing and building practical business forecasting projects
    • Strong statistical fundamentals
    • Technical degree in Industrial Engineering, Mathematics, Operations Research, or similar
    • Experience with Python, Julia, R or similar programming languages in a team development context
  • Ideal:
    • Experience solving problems in logistics
    • Comfortable with software engineering fundamentals
    • Experience deploying managing solutions as applications and endpoints
