Data Ops Manager information

What are some common challenges faced by a Data Ops manager, and how can they be addressed?

Data Ops Managers often encounter challenges such as coordinating across multiple teams, ensuring data quality, and managing fast-evolving data pipelines. Success in this role requires strong communication skills to align stakeholders, robust processes for monitoring data workflows, and the ability to quickly troubleshoot issues when data delivery is disrupted. Adopting automation tools and fostering a culture of continuous improvement can help Data Ops Managers maintain reliable, scalable systems while supporting organizational data needs.

What is a Data Ops manager?

Data Ops Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the processes, tools, and teams involved in managing and optimizing data operations within an organization. They ensure the smooth flow, quality, and accessibility of data across various platforms and departments. Their role often includes automating data pipelines, implementing data governance practices, and collaborating with data engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to support data-driven decision making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Ops manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Data Ops Manager, you need a deep understanding of data management, analytics workflows, and process automation, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like SQL, Python, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and orchestration systems such as Apache Airflow is typically required, along with certifications in data management or cloud services. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help coordinate cross-functional teams and drive data initiatives. These competencies are crucial for ensuring data reliability, optimizing data pipelines, and enabling data-driven decision-making across the organization.

Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking aย Senior Data Ops Project Manager that will serve as the primary link between product requests and engineering execution. They will ensure all projects are properly prioritized, executed, and delivered on time to the team's high quality standards, while balancing and sustaining the developers' workload.

RESPONSIBILITIESย ย
  • Drive or facilitate team projects based on technical complexity to ensure quality standards and deadlines are met. Act as the primary driver for familiar domains, or as a facilitator to unblock decisions and align stakeholders when navigating technical projects.
  • Coordinate across domains with the various teams we support and help manage the areas our team owns (data infrastructure, tracking, payments, internal tools, and GDPR maintenance etc.,) to effectively manage risks, quality standards, and scope adjustments.
  • Unblocking & Delivery: Actively identify and clear technical blockers, dynamically adjusting timelines and keeping stakeholders informed to keep engineers focused.
  • Manage incoming, existing, and ad-hoc tasks to properly prioritize and meet the needs of internal and external stakeholders, while balancing capacity constraints and minimizing project delays
  • Oversee day-to-day project support to keep tasks on track, including leading standups and team meetings as needed.
  • Conduct check-ins with team members to identify workflow bottlenecks or challenges. Independently resolve recurring operational issues where possible, and escalate complex blockers to the appropriate parties.
  • Continuously improve the team's workflow by leading post-mortems, identifying inefficiencies, and proposing solutions to try.
  • Identify opportunities to support other teams or improve internal processes without overextending our team's bandwidth, always looking for ways to optimize systems across the company.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in project management, production, or technical operations, ideally within gaming, data infrastructure, or live-service tech.
  • Technical Literacy: Strong conceptual understanding of modern software architecture, such as API integrations, database logic, and the relationship between frontend and backend systems.
  • Tooling: Experience using organizational tools like Jira, Basecamp, and Confluence to build workflows and dashboards that provide clear visibility into team progress and capacity.
  • Strategic Inquiry: An ability to talk to developers and ask the questions that uncover risks or hidden work before it's too late.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to identify workflow bottlenecks and suggest structural improvements rather than simply moving tasks through a queue.
  • Independent Judgement: A track record of managing project workflows independently, with the professional maturity to know when to ask for guidance on high-stakes decisions.
  • Communication: Ability to update stakeholders on progress and coordinate with QA and Support to ensure a high-quality end product.
