What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Data Modeling position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Data Modeling, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in database design, and a solid understanding of data structures, usually supported by a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Expertise with tools such as ERwin, SQL, PowerDesigner, or similar data modeling software, as well as knowledge of normalization techniques and experience with data warehousing concepts, are highly valued. Effective communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities set outstanding data modelers apart, allowing them to convey complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. These skills are vital for building accurate, scalable data models that serve as the foundation for reliable data-driven decision-making within organizations.

What is a Data Modeling job?

A Data Modeling job involves designing and structuring data to ensure it is organized, efficient, and scalable for business needs. Data modelers create conceptual, logical, and physical data models that define relationships between data elements. They work closely with database administrators, data engineers, and analysts to optimize data storage and retrieval. Their role is crucial for maintaining data integrity and supporting business intelligence and analytics initiatives. Skills in SQL, database design, and data normalization are essential for success in this role.

Will data modeling be replaced by AI?

Data modeling is a fundamental skill for data modelers, and while AI tools can assist in automating certain tasks like generating schemas or analyzing data patterns, they do not fully replace the need for human expertise in designing, validating, and understanding complex data structures. Data modelers will continue to play a critical role in ensuring data quality and integrity, often working alongside AI technologies. Proficiency in data modeling tools and concepts remains essential for the role.

How much do data modelers make?

Data modelers typically earn a median annual salary between $80,000 and $120,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior data modelers with advanced skills in database design and data warehousing can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $130,000 annually.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in Data Modeling?

A typical day in Data Modeling often involves collaborating with business analysts, database administrators, and software developers to understand data requirements and translate them into logical and physical data structures. Data modelers spend time designing, reviewing, and optimizing data models, ensuring accuracy and consistency across systems and projects. They also review data flows, document data dictionaries, and participate in meetings to align data architecture with overall business needs. The role frequently requires balancing independent technical work with teamwork, as well as responding to feedback and evolving project requirements to support organizational goals.

Is data modeling a good career?

Data modeling is a valuable career in data management and analytics, involving designing and organizing data structures using tools like ER diagrams and modeling languages. It requires strong analytical skills, knowledge of database systems, and often benefits from certifications such as Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP). The role offers opportunities in various industries with a typical work environment focused on data accuracy and efficiency.

What does a data modeler do?

A data modeler designs and creates data models to organize and structure data for databases and information systems. They analyze data requirements, develop schemas, and use tools like ER diagrams to ensure data consistency and efficiency. Strong knowledge of data management, modeling techniques, and database systems is essential for this role.

The impact you'll have at Concora Credit:

We are seeking a skilled and strategic Data Modeler with a strong foundation in data architecture to join our Data Architecture department. In this role, you will be at the center of designing and governing our enterprise data models, driving Master Data Management (MDM) initiatives, and enabling seamless data system integration across our Databricks-powered lakehouse environment. You will collaborate closely with data engineers, analytics engineers, and business stakeholders to ensure our data assets are well-structured, consistent, and fit for purpose.

We hire people, not positions. That's because, at Concora Credit, we put people first, including our customers, partners, and Team Members. Concora Credit is guided by a single purpose: to help non-prime customers do more with credit. Today, we have helped millions of customers access credit. We're an established company with over 20 years of experience, but now we're taking things to the next level. We're seeking someone who wants to impact the business and play a pivotal role in leading the charge for change.

Responsibilities

As our Data Modeler & Architect, you will:

Data Modeling & Design

  • Design and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models that support enterprise data strategy and business requirements.
  • Develop and enforce data modeling standards, best practices, and naming conventions across the organization.
  • Create and manage dimensional models (star/snowflake schemas) optimized for analytics workloads on Databricks.
  • Collaborate with data engineers to translate logical models into efficient physical implementations within the Databricks lakehouse (bronze, silver, gold layers).

Master Data Management (MDM)

  • Lead the design and implementation of MDM frameworks, including entity resolution, golden record creation, and data stewardship workflows.
  • Define and manage master data domains such as Customer, Product, Partners, and Location.
  • Partner with business units to identify authoritative data sources and resolve data conflicts across systems.
  • Govern master data lifecycle - creation, maintenance, retirement - and enforce data quality rules.

Data System Integration

  • Architect data models that support data ingestion from multiple source systems (ERP, CRM, third-party APIs, etc.) into the lakehouse.
  • Design canonical data models to enable consistent representation of shared entities across integrated systems.
  • Work with data engineering and BI teams to ensure data contracts, schemas, and transformations align with enterprise data standards.
  • Support event-driven and batch integration patterns, ensuring model compatibility with streaming and batch pipelines.

Architecture & Governance

  • Contribute to the enterprise data architecture roadmap, aligning data modeling efforts with strategic technology initiatives.
  • Maintain a centralized data model repository and keep documentation current across all model versions.
  • Participate in data governance forums, providing modeling expertise to support data cataloging, lineage, and quality initiatives.
  • Conduct data model reviews and provide mentorship to junior modelers and data engineers on modeling principles.ย

These duties must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

We know experience comes in many forms and that many skills are transferable. If your experience is close to what we're looking for, consider applying. Diversity has made us the entrepreneurial and innovative company that we are today.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in data modeling, data architecture, or a closely related role.
