What are the four types of data migration?

Data migration involves four main types: storage migration, database migration, application migration, and business process migration. Storage migration transfers data between storage systems, database migration moves data between database platforms, application migration involves relocating applications to new environments, and business process migration updates workflows during system changes. Data migration professionals should understand these types to plan and execute effective migrations efficiently.

What is the work of data migration?

Data migration involves transferring data from one system, storage, or format to another, often during system upgrades or consolidations. Data migration specialists plan, execute, and verify the process to ensure data integrity and minimal downtime, typically using tools like ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) software. Attention to detail and knowledge of databases are essential for successful data migration projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Data Migration position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Data Migration, you need strong expertise in database management, data mapping, and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like SQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Informatica, or similar platforms, as well as certifications in data management or cloud technologies, is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and clear communication are key soft skills for success in this role. These capabilities are critical to ensuring data integrity, minimizing downtime, and facilitating smooth transitions during system upgrades or technology changes.

What skills are needed for data migration?

Data migration professionals need strong technical skills in database management, data modeling, and scripting languages such as SQL, Python, or PowerShell. They should also have a good understanding of data quality, data mapping, and experience with migration tools like ETL software, along with problem-solving abilities and attention to detail to ensure accurate data transfer and minimal downtime.

What are the typical challenges faced by Data Migration professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Data Migration professionals often encounter challenges like data inconsistencies, legacy system incompatibility, and unanticipated downtime during migration projects. Careful planning, thorough testing, and strong documentation are essential to mitigate these risks. Working collaboratively with IT, business analysts, and end users helps anticipate potential issues and ensures all data requirements are met. A proactive approach to troubleshooting and continuous communication with stakeholders helps achieve successful, error-free migrations. As a Data Migration expert, you'll frequently navigate these situations to deliver smooth transitions for organizations undergoing digital transformation.

What are the career opportunities in data migration?

Data migration offers career opportunities such as data migration specialist, data analyst, database administrator, and data engineer. These roles typically require knowledge of database management, data transformation tools, and scripting languages like SQL or Python. Certifications in data management or cloud platforms can enhance job prospects in this field.

What is a Data Migration job?

A Data Migration job involves transferring data from one system, format, or storage location to another while ensuring its integrity, accuracy, and security. • Document source-to-target mappings for migration into the new Jira configuration.
  • Identify duplicate records across repositories and help define deduplication rules.

  • Work with stakeholders to clarify data ownership, field usage, transformation rules, and reporting requirements.
  • Validate archived Jira data in Snowflake for reporting continuity.
  • Create data quality reports, exception reports, reconciliation reports, and migration readiness dashboards.
  • Support user acceptance testing by preparing validation scenarios and sample datasets.
  • Partner with QA testers to define test cases and expected results.
  • Review migration outputs and compare source versus target data for completeness and accuracy.
  • Assist with cutover planning, dry-run analysis, and post-migration validation.
  • Source data profiling reports.
  • Source-to-target mapping documents.
  • Data normalization rules.
  • Deduplication rule documentation.
  • Data quality issue logs.
  • Migration reconciliation reports.
  • Snowflake archival validation reports.
  • UAT support documentation.

Skills Must have
  • Strong data analysis experience, preferably in migration, consolidation, or data quality initiatives.
  • Strong SQL skills for querying, profiling, reconciliation, and validation.
  • Experience analyzing structured and semi-structured data.
  • Ability to create clear source-to-target mapping documents.
  • Experience with data quality dimensions such as completeness, uniqueness, consistency, validity, and referential integrity.
  • Strong understanding of deduplication, matching logic, exception handling, and reconciliation.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into data rules and validation criteria.
  • Strong documentation and stakeholder communication skills.

Nice to have
  • Experience with Jira, Jira Cloud, Jira Data Center, Jira Service Management, or other work management platforms.
  • Experience with Snowflake reporting or analytical data models.
  • Familiarity with Jira entities such as issues, epics, stories, subtasks, workflows, statuses, priorities, labels, custom fields, links, comments, and attachments.
  • Experience with BI/reporting tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or similar.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
  • Experience supporting data migration dry runs, mock conversions, and production cutovers.
