About Us:
The Joan Meyers Jampel Center for Michigan Jewish Heritage is a collaborative effort to promote Michigan’s Jewish heritage through the preservation of archival collections and joint outreach. It strives to connect the past with the present and celebrate the contributions of Michigan’s Jewry to the state and beyond. The archives of the Jampel Center collect, preserve, and make accessible the history of Jewish Detroit and Jewish Michigan.
Position Overview:
The Archives Digital Media Intern will work closely with the archival team to digitize, catalog, and preserve various media formats including using obsolete media equipment. The intern will gain hands-on experience in archival work, digital preservation, and metadata management while contributing to the long-term preservation and accessibility of our collection.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the digitization of materials like VHS tapes, audio cassettes, 8mm films, slides, photographs, and other archival materials.
  • Create and input accurate metadata for digitized items in our digital database.
  • Collaborate with archival staff to maintain records and ensure data accuracy in the database.
  • Perform quality control checks on digitized files to ensure the integrity of digital assets.
  • Contribute to the development of best practices for digital preservation and metadata management.
  • Provide support for special projects as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing (preference to students with multiple courses completed) or recently completed a degree in archival studies, library science, history, information management, or a related field.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Basic knowledge of audio and video formats, including VHS, audio cassettes, and 8mm film is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to lift and handle archival materials (up to 50 lbs.) with care and attention to preservation needs.
