Job description

We are looking for a talented American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter for the school year.

Hourly Rate Range: $32.00-$42.00 per hour

Responsibilities would include:

  • Provide sign language interpretation for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) in classroom, small group, and school-related settings.
  • Facilitate communication between students, teachers, staff, and peers using American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication methods as appropriate.
  • Interpret instructional content, classroom discussions, meetings, school assemblies, and extracurricular activities as assigned.
  • Adapt interpretation style to match each student's language level and communication needs.
  • Collaborate with teachers, Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TDHH), related service providers, and school staff to ensure effective communication access.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct and school district policies.
  • Promote student independence, self-advocacy, and access to the educational environment.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records as required by the school district.
  • Stay current on best practices in educational interpreting and participate in ongoing professional development.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Associate's Degree required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score meeting district or state requirements preferred.
  • Must meet Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) requirements for Educational Interpreters, or be eligible to do so prior to employment.
  • Previous experience interpreting in a K-12 educational setting preferred.
  • Successful completion of required fingerprinting, criminal background check, and all pre-employment requirements.
