Job description

GENERAL PURPOSE

Protects life and property by performing firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, urban rescue, wildland interface, and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities.

FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Fire suppression activities that include rescuing of persons, providing for exposure protection, hazard confinement, fire suppression and extinguishment, ventilation of hazardous areas, and proper salvage and overhaul techniques
  • Firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps, and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks
  • Basic life support emergency medical services
  • Participate in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects
  • Receive and relays fire calls and alarms
  • Operate radio and other communication equipment
  • Utilize appropriate safety equipment under extremely hazardous conditions
  • Participate in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs
  • Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment
  • Develop plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism through attendance of job improvement courses, seminars, and conferences
  • Follow departmental Rules and Regulations, Standard Operating Procedures, Medical Treatment Guidelines, and Field Operational Guidelines
  • Maintain physical condition and skills
  • Present programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics
  • Perform salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris
  • Conduct duties with associated efficiency, including written correspondence, development of spreadsheets, operation of database programs and computer data entry
  • Conduct inventories
  • Carry out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, Local Laws and Ordinances
  • Protect the privacy of all patient information in accordance with Pleasant Grove Fire Department's privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by Federal Law, and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a government / heath care provider employee
  • Encouraged and expected to report, without the threat of retaliation, any concerns regarding the department's policies and procedures on patient privacy and any observed practices in violation of that policy to the Fire Chief
  • Participate in the Department's privacy training and communicate privacy policy information to coworkers, students, patients, and others in accordance with Pleasant Grove Fire Department policies

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Utah driver's license
  • Must have refrained from ever using hallucinogenic drugs; marijuana in the past two (2) years; all other illegal drug use (including steroids) in the past five (5) years; must be a non-smoker and have refrained from use of any tobacco products(s) for the past 12 months
  • Must have a good driving record free from "at fault" accidents and convictions for violations of criminal traffic infractions to include adjudication withheld for the past 12 months. A good driving record will include no driver's license suspension within the past five years
  • Must not have been convicted or plead nolle contender to any 1st or 2nd degree misdemeanor within the last three years

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Utah Certification as a Firefighter I and II is required
  • Hazmat Awareness and Operations Certifications.
  • Utah/NREMT Paramedic certification is required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Experience:

  • Prior experience preferred, but not required

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of cause and origin based upon available evidence
  • Knowledge of jurisprudence when investigating criminal action with regard to fire
  • Knowledge of the Department's Rules and Regulations, Standard Operating Procedures, and safety policies, and enforce such policies as needed
  • Knowledge of the streets, roadways, fire hydrants, water mains, major buildings, and standpipe and sprinkler outlets located within the boundaries of the City of Pleasant Grove and its external service areas
  • Knowledge of the Standard Fire Prevention Code and the City's ordinances specific to fire prevention

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment
  • Ability to learn to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques
  • Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training, or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke
  • Ability to use common sense, maturity, ethical decision-making ability, and commitment
  • Ability to make split-second decisions in life-or-death situations
  • Ability to handle stressful situations
  • Ability to climb, maintain body equilibrium, bend, kneel, reach, stand, walk, run, push, pull, lift grasp, talk and hear
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and written
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or residents
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus

WORKING CONDITIONS

In addition to the physical demands of the job as listed below the employee must pass the department's annual Physical Agility Test (PAT). The employee must also be cleared for duty as determined by a physician through required annual or biennial medical screening evaluations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk or hear;

stand; walk; use hands to manipulate, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee must be able to move objects between 20-100 pounds' short distances (20 feet or more), perform duties requiring pulling of 40 pounds or more such as removing hose from apparatus, pulling ceilings, starting power equipment, and opening doors on the apparatus, as well as frequently lift objects weighing 50 to 100 lbs.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outdoor weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night shifts. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. Individual is exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistant, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents, and oils.

The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT/Paramedic activities when noise levels may be loud.


The employee will be required to work 24-hour shifts. During this time, the employee may experience several interruptions of sleep, meals and/or other activities. The employee will be expected to perform essential job functions despite the potential for fatigue resultant from extended shift work.
