How much do data engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 24, 2026, the average yearly pay for data engineering in Hawaii is $171,447.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $138,700.00 and $176,600.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is AI replacing data engineers?

AI is automating certain tasks within data engineering, such as data cleaning and pipeline management, but it does not replace the need for data engineers. Data engineers are essential for designing, building, and maintaining complex data systems, and their expertise in tools like SQL, Spark, and cloud platforms remains critical for managing data workflows and ensuring data quality.

What work does a data engineer do?

A data engineer designs, builds, and maintains data pipelines and infrastructure to collect, process, and store large volumes of data. They work with tools like SQL, Python, and cloud platforms to ensure data is accessible, reliable, and ready for analysis by data scientists and analysts.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Data Engineer?

Data Engineers regularly design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines to support analytics and business intelligence teams. Their daily tasks often involve working with large datasets, optimizing data storage, ensuring data integrity, and troubleshooting data-related issues. Collaboration with data scientists, analysts, and software engineers is common to align on data requirements and improve workflows. You may also participate in regular code reviews and contribute to the ongoing improvement of data infrastructure. This role is ideal for problem-solvers who enjoy working with both code and complex systems in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

What engineers make 500,000?

Senior data engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in cloud platforms, big data tools, and strong programming knowledge can earn salaries of $500,000 or more, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or within large tech companies. Achieving this level often requires a combination of technical expertise, leadership roles, and sometimes stock options or bonuses.

What is a Data Engineering job?

A Data Engineering job involves designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure that enables efficient data collection, storage, and processing. Data Engineers develop pipelines to transform raw data into usable formats for analytics and machine learning. They work with databases, big data technologies, and cloud platforms to ensure data is accessible and reliable. Their role is crucial for organizations to make data-driven decisions and optimize business processes.

What jobs make $1,000,000 a year?

In data engineering, earning $1,000,000 annually is rare and typically involves senior roles such as lead data engineers or those working in high-paying industries like finance or technology, often with extensive experience, advanced skills in cloud platforms, and leadership responsibilities. Most high earners in this field also supplement income through equity, bonuses, or consulting. Such compensation levels are uncommon and usually require a combination of expertise, strategic position, and company size.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Data Engineering position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Data Engineering, you need a solid background in programming (such as Python, Java, or Scala), data modeling, and database management, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ETL tools, cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, big data frameworks (e.g., Hadoop, Spark), and relevant certifications is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively across teams are key soft skills for this role. These attributes are crucial for designing robust data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and enabling organizations to make data-driven decisions efficiently.

Job description

Data Engineer

The Opportunity:

Ever-expanding technology like IoT, machine learning, and artificial intelligence means that there's more structured and unstructured data available today than ever before. As a data engineer, you know that organizing data can yield pivotal insights when it's gathered from disparate sources. We need an experienced data professional like you to help our clients find answers in their data to impact important missions, from fraud detection to cancer research to national intelligence.

As a data engineer at Booz Allen, you'll use your expertise to help build advanced technology solutions and lead data engineering activities on some of the most mission-driven projects in the industry. You'll guide data engineering activities by overseeing the development and deployment of pipelines and platforms that organize and make disparate data meaningful.

Here, you'll mentor a multi-disciplinary team of analysts, data engineers, developers, and data consumers in a fast-paced, agile environment. You'll use your expertise in analytical exploration and data examination while you oversee the assessment, design, building, and maintenance of scalable platforms for your clients.

Work with us to use data for good.

Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have:

  • 10+ years of experience architecting and delivering AI enabled mission or enterprise systems, including data integration, secure compute environments, and operator facing applications in restricted or classified settings

  • 10+ years of experience designing and deploying data pipelines, ontologies, and application workflows on platforms such as Palantir Foundry or Gotham, including air gapped, degraded connectivity, or multiclassification environments

  • 10+ years of experience developing secure analytics ecosystems, including log pipelines, monitoring frameworks, operational dashboards, or intelligence fusion platforms in greenfield or legacy modernization efforts

  • 10+ years of experience implementing DevSecOps practices, including containerization, orchestration, CI/CD, and automated testing within constrained or limited toolchain environments

  • 10+ years of experience integrating AI/ML capabilities into production workflows or operator tooling, such as LLM enabled assistants, model augmented decision aids, or automation solutions

  • 10+ years of experience making architectural tradeoffs under constrained mission conditions, including limited infrastructure, fragmented networks, evolving requirements, or high-pressure operational timelines

  • Experience rapidly learning unfamiliar technologies, developing hands on proficiency, and guiding engineering teams through full lifecycle implementation

  • Experience communicating architectural decisions and solution impacts to engineering teams, government clients, and senior nontechnical stakeholders

  • Secret clearance

  • Bachelor's degree

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience supporting multi cloud, multi enclave, or multiclassification architectures, including environments spanning NIPR, SIPR, JWICS, or coalition networks

  • Experience contributing to major defense programs or largescale systems integration efforts, including navigating acquisition, compliance, or bureaucratic constraints

  • Experience supporting DoD installations, operational units, or C2 systems in environments with incomplete documentation, degraded systems, or inconsistent technical baselines

  • Experience developing agentic workflows, automation pipelines, or custom tooling that improved engineering velocity or reduced operator burden

  • Experience serving as a senior technical lead or architect responsible for end-to-end solution delivery

  • Experience working on tiger teams, flyaway teams, or rapid response engineering missions requiring accelerated delivery under complex conditions

  • Top Secret clearance

  • Architecture frameworksCertifications such as AWS, Palantir Foundry or Gotham, or Kubernetes Certification

Clearance:
