What Does a Data Engineer Do?

The job duties of a data engineer involve helping with the development of systems, software, and infrastructure used to process, store and analyze data. Your responsibilities in this career include working to install data management software. Your employer may expect you to perform maintenance and install updates to all software and systems that they use for data acquisition, management, and analysis. Data engineers also analyze existing data systems to find ways to improve efficiency and accessibility. You then suggest upgrades or changes based on your assessment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, data modeling, and programming languages such as Python or Java, often coupled with a relevant degree. Familiarity with ETL tools, big data frameworks (like Hadoop or Spark), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional data engineers apart. These skills and qualities are essential for building robust data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and supporting data-driven decision-making across organizations.

How do Data Engineers typically collaborate with Data Scientists and Analysts within an organization?

Data Engineers play a crucial role in ensuring that Data Scientists and Analysts have reliable, well-structured data for their projects. This collaboration often involves building and maintaining data pipelines, optimizing data storage solutions, and troubleshooting data quality issues. Regular communication and agile teamwork are common, with Data Engineers frequently participating in meetings to understand analytical requirements and adjust data processes accordingly. By working closely together, these teams can quickly iterate on data models and deliver actionable insights to drive business decisions.

What are Data Engineers?

Data Engineers are IT professionals who design, construct, install, and maintain large-scale processing systems and other infrastructure for collecting, storing, and analyzing data. They build and optimize data pipelines and architectures that allow organizations to efficiently access and use data for business insights. Data Engineers work closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure that data is reliable, accessible, and secure. Their responsibilities often include working with databases, cloud platforms, and big data tools.

What is the difference between Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectData EngineerData Scientist
Primary FocusBuilding and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructureAnalyzing data to extract insights and create models
SkillsSQL, ETL, programming (Python, Java), database managementStatistics, machine learning, data analysis, programming (Python, R)
Work EnvironmentData warehouses, cloud platforms, backend systemsData analysis environments, research labs, visualization tools
Common ToolsApache Spark, Hadoop, Airflow, SQLJupyter, RStudio, Tableau, scikit-learn

Data Engineers focus on creating and maintaining the infrastructure that allows data to be collected, stored, and processed efficiently. Data Scientists analyze this data to generate insights, build predictive models, and support decision-making. While their skills overlap, Data Engineers are more involved in data pipeline development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

Job description

Data Engineer
Brooksource
Fortune 500 Oil & Gas Client
Houston, TX
Overview
We are partnering with a rapidly growing data and AI team within a leading energy organization that is building out its core data engineering capabilities. This team serves as a centralized R&D function, enabling enterprise-wide analytics and AI initiatives by transforming complex, fragmented data into scalable, production-ready assets.
This role sits within a small but expanding pod led by a Data Science leader and works at the intersection of Data Engineering, Data Science, and AI. The team is focused on high-impact, reusable use cases that drive value across business units-removing the need for siloed development and accelerating innovation.
They are looking for a hands-on Data Engineer who can bring structure to evolving data environments, build scalable pipelines, and partner closely with both technical and business stakeholders. This is an opportunity to shape foundational data capabilities in a high-visibility, high-growth environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines using Azure and Databricks (ADF, Spark, Delta Lake).
  • Develop robust ETL/ELT processes to ingest and transform structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.
  • Implement and optimize data architectures (e.g., Medallion/Bronze-Silver-Gold) to support analytics and AI use cases.
  • Write high-performance data processing jobs using PySpark and Spark SQL.
  • Collaborate with Data Scientists and AI Engineers to enable model development and production use cases.
  • Translate ambiguous or evolving business needs into scalable, maintainable data solutions.
  • Improve data reliability, quality, and performance across pipelines and platforms.
  • Contribute to CI/CD and DevOps practices for data engineering workflows.
  • Support development of reusable frameworks and proof-of-concept solutions for enterprise-wide adoption.

Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in Data Engineering or a related role.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Databricks and Azure Cloud (preferred; other cloud platforms considered).
  • Proficiency in PySpark, Spark SQL, Python, and SQL.
  • Experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines in modern data platforms.
  • Solid understanding of distributed data processing, data modeling, and data architecture.
  • Ability to operate effectively in less-defined environments and bring structure to evolving data challenges.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across technical and non-technical teams.

Nice to Have
  • Experience in Oil & Gas, energy, or manufacturing environments.
  • Exposure to CI/CD, DevOps, and automated deployment practices.
  • Familiarity with Data Science concepts (ML models, statistics, feature engineering).
  • Experience supporting or integrating with AI/ML workflows.

Team & Environment
  • Reports into a Data Science-led organization that partners closely with an adjacent AI Engineering group.
  • Functions as a centralized capability supporting multiple business units.
  • Small, pod-based team structure with significant growth planned.
  • High visibility work tied directly to enterprise AI and digital transformation initiatives.
