What is a data engineer?

Data Engineers are IT professionals who design, construct, install, and maintain large-scale processing systems and other infrastructure for collecting, storing, and analyzing data. They build and optimize data pipelines and architectures that allow organizations to efficiently access and use data for business insights. Data Engineers work closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure that data is reliable, accessible, and secure. Their responsibilities often include working with databases, cloud platforms, and big data tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, data modeling, and programming languages such as Python or Java, often coupled with a relevant degree. Familiarity with ETL tools, big data frameworks (like Hadoop or Spark), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional data engineers apart. These skills and qualities are essential for building robust data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and supporting data-driven decision-making across organizations.

What does a data engineer do?

The job duties of a data engineer involve helping with the development of systems, software, and infrastructure used to process, store and analyze data. Your responsibilities in this career include working to install data management software. Your employer may expect you to perform maintenance and install updates to all software and systems that they use for data acquisition, management, and analysis. Data engineers also analyze existing data systems to find ways to improve efficiency and accessibility. You then suggest upgrades or changes based on your assessment.

How do data engineers typically collaborate with data scientists and analysts within an organization?

Data Engineers play a crucial role in ensuring that Data Scientists and Analysts have reliable, well-structured data for their projects. This collaboration often involves building and maintaining data pipelines, optimizing data storage solutions, and troubleshooting data quality issues. Regular communication and agile teamwork are common, with Data Engineers frequently participating in meetings to understand analytical requirements and adjust data processes accordingly. By working closely together, these teams can quickly iterate on data models and deliver actionable insights to drive business decisions.

About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Data Analyst to help turn complex cloud, financial, and operational data into clear, actionable insights that improve business performance. In this role, you will serve as a trusted analytical partner to Cloud Operations, Cloud Engineering, Cloud Accounting, and Cloud Sales Leadership, helping teams make smarter decisions across multi-cloud environments.
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys moving beyond standard reporting to uncover meaningful trends, identify risks, and deliver recommendations that influence both strategy and execution. You'll work with data from AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), as well as financial, operational, and customer data, to support cloud optimization, forecasting, operational performance, and decision-making.
If you're energized by solving business problems with data, building scalable analytics solutions, and helping leaders understand what matters most, this role offers strong visibility and the chance to make measurable impact.
What You'll Do
  • Analyze cloud spend, usage, and operational data to identify trends, risks, anomalies, and optimization opportunities.
  • Deliver insights and recommendations that improve cost efficiency, resource utilization, operational effectiveness, and financial performance.
  • Partner with business and technical stakeholders to define KPIs, scorecards, and success metrics aligned to organizational goals.
  • Build forecasting and predictive models to improve visibility into cloud spend, resource demand, capacity planning, and operational readiness.
  • Evaluate reservation strategies, savings plans, licensing impacts, and commitment-based discounts across cloud platforms.
  • Support budgeting, chargeback, showback, and cost allocation initiatives with advanced analytical modeling.
  • Develop dashboards, reporting models, and self-service analytics tools that help teams make faster, better-informed decisions.
  • Investigate recurring operational issues and recommend opportunities for automation, remediation, and process improvement.
  • Measure the impact of FinOps and optimization initiatives to quantify business value.
  • Communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership.
What You Bring
  • 3-5 years of experience in data analytics, business intelligence, cloud analytics, financial analytics, or a related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with large, complex datasets and translating analysis into practical business recommendations.
  • Knowledge of AWS, Azure, and GCP cloud services, billing structures, and consumption models.
  • Experience creating dashboards, KPIs, scorecards, forecasts, and predictive models for operational and executive stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or other analytical programming languages.
  • Experience integrating data from multiple sources using APIs, automated workflows, and cloud-native analytics tools.
  • Understanding of data modeling, governance, data quality, and business performance metrics.
  • Familiarity with AI, machine learning, anomaly detection, and predictive analytics is a plus.
Preferred Certifications
Candidates with certifications in the following areas will be especially attractive:
  • FinOps
  • Cloud Platform Certification (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Data Analytics / Business Intelligence
  • AI or Machine Learning
