What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, data modeling, and programming languages such as Python or Java, often coupled with a relevant degree. Familiarity with ETL tools, big data frameworks (like Hadoop or Spark), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional data engineers apart. These skills and qualities are essential for building robust data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and supporting data-driven decision-making across organizations.

Are data engineers highly paid?

Data engineers are generally well-paid due to their specialized skills in designing and maintaining data infrastructure, with salaries often higher than many other IT roles. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and industry, but strong technical skills in programming, databases, and cloud platforms typically lead to higher earnings.

What Does a Data Engineer Do?

The job duties of a data engineer involve helping with the development of systems, software, and infrastructure used to process, store and analyze data. Your responsibilities in this career include working to install data management software. Your employer may expect you to perform maintenance and install updates to all software and systems that they use for data acquisition, management, and analysis. Data engineers also analyze existing data systems to find ways to improve efficiency and accessibility. You then suggest upgrades or changes based on your assessment.

What are Data Engineers?

Data Engineers are IT professionals who design, construct, install, and maintain large-scale processing systems and other infrastructure for collecting, storing, and analyzing data. They build and optimize data pipelines and architectures that allow organizations to efficiently access and use data for business insights. Data Engineers work closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure that data is reliable, accessible, and secure. Their responsibilities often include working with databases, cloud platforms, and big data tools.

How do Data Engineers typically collaborate with Data Scientists and Analysts within an organization?

Data Engineers play a crucial role in ensuring that Data Scientists and Analysts have reliable, well-structured data for their projects. This collaboration often involves building and maintaining data pipelines, optimizing data storage solutions, and troubleshooting data quality issues. Regular communication and agile teamwork are common, with Data Engineers frequently participating in meetings to understand analytical requirements and adjust data processes accordingly. By working closely together, these teams can quickly iterate on data models and deliver actionable insights to drive business decisions.

What does a data engineer actually do?

A data engineer designs, builds, and maintains the infrastructure and pipelines that enable organizations to collect, store, and process large volumes of data. They work with tools like SQL, Python, and cloud platforms to ensure data is accessible, reliable, and ready for analysis by data scientists and analysts.

Is a data engineer entry level?

Data engineering is typically an intermediate to senior role that requires experience with programming, databases, and data pipeline tools. Entry-level data engineering positions may be available for candidates with relevant internships or strong foundational skills in SQL, Python, or cloud platforms, but most roles expect some prior experience. Certifications or coursework in data management can also be beneficial for those starting out.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Senior data engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in big data tools, and leadership roles can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or large tech companies. Such compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options. Achieving this level typically requires years of expertise and a strong track record in data architecture and engineering.

Position Summary: Full Time; Monday through Friday

The Development Engineer is a critical member of Rock Exotica's Research & Development group, responsible for managing the full lifecycle of New Product Introduction (NPI) from concept approval through production release. This role bridges engineering design and manufacturing execution — owning project timelines, phase gate management, product data, documentation, internal part and assembly manufacturing, and part sourcing. The Development Engineer ensures that every new product arrives on the manufacturing floor with the documentation, data, and supply chain readiness it needs to be built right the first time. This role requires full alignment with EOS Gets It, Wants It and Capacity To Do It principles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

NPI Project & Phase Gate Management

  • Owns and maintains NPI project timelines from design release through production launch, ensuring milestones are clearly defined, tracked, and communicated.
  • Manages the phase gate process; assembles gate review packages, tracks exit criteria, schedules reviews, and ensures all criteria are met before a project advances.
  • Identifies and escalates risks to schedule, cost, or scope proactively.
  • Serves as the primary NPI project management point of contact within R&D, coordinating across Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, and Supply Chain.
  • Maintains NPI asset management including project files, revision histories, and program records.
  • Leads product improvement projects from initiation through release, applying the same phase gate discipline used for NPI to ensure changes are scoped, scheduled, and delivered without disrupting production.

Documentation & Drawing Control

  • Owns drawing review and control. Manages revision tracking, formal drawing releases, and ECO (Engineering Change Order) coordination in collaboration with Design Engineers.
  • Ensures all documentation is complete, approved, and production-ready prior to launch.
  • Drives documentation updates and ECO change management for product improvement projects, ensuring drawings, BOMs, and work instructions stay accurate and aligned with released changes.

ERP Data Entry & Product Data Management

  • Creates and maintains part numbers, assemblies, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) in the ERP system.
  • Ensures ERP data is accurate, complete, and updated at each phase gate — including costs, lead times, and production readiness status.
  • Collaborates with the Manufacturing Engineer on ERP router development; owns all non-routing ERP data entry.

Part Sourcing & Supply Readiness

  • Leads sourcing activities for new components — issues RFQs, coordinates supplier qualification, and manages lead time planning for NPI programs.
  • Partners with Operations and Purchasing to ensure materials are available for prototype builds, pilot runs, and production launch.
  • Supports make/buy analyses and recommends sourcing strategies for new and custom parts.
  • Manages the Approved Vendor List (AVL) for new products, ensuring second-source identification where appropriate.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Collaborates closely with Design Engineers on drawing releases, BOM accuracy, and design-to-manufacturing transitions.
  • Works with the Manufacturing Engineer to align process readiness, tooling timelines, and production documentation.
  • Communicates project status, decisions, and risks to the R&D Manager and relevant stakeholders in a clear and timely manner.
  • Represents R&D on cross-functional NPI teams and project reviews.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties and special projects as assigned.

Document Creation

  • Assists Design Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers in the creation of Part Drawings, Assembly Drawings, Work Instructions, Travelers, Tolerance Stack Analysis, DFMEA, PFMEA, and Product Test Reports.

  • Experience authoring manufacturing documentation including work instructions, travelers, and BOMs.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems for product data management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a precision machined components or hardware manufacturing environment.
