They build and optimize data pipelines and architectures that allow organizations to efficiently access and use data for business insights. Data Engineers work closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure that data is reliable, accessible, and secure. Their responsibilities often include working with databases, cloud platforms, and big data tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, data modeling, and programming languages such as Python or Java, often coupled with a relevant degree. Familiarity with ETL tools, big data frameworks (like Hadoop or Spark), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional data engineers apart. These skills and qualities are essential for building robust data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and supporting data-driven decision-making across organizations.

Quality Engineer
Hollister-Whitney - Quincy, IL 62305
Regular Position, Full Time
If you are a forward-thinker interested in fostering a dynamic and supportive environment, then keep reading! We are searching for a hands-on, results-oriented Quality Engineer to join the Hollister-Whitney team. This role will help strengthen quality systems, improve manufacturing processes, and support the site's journey toward ISO 9001 certification and operational excellence.
About Us
Vantage Elevation, LLC is North America's leading independent manufacturer of elevator components and systems. Vantage is comprised of eight business units including GAL Manufacturing; GAL Canada; Hollister-Whitney; Elevator Controls; Courion; Bore-Max; Thames Valley Controls; and Vertical Dimensions. Through its brands, Vantage supplies almost all electro-mechanical devices used in contemporary elevators. The Vantage group employs over 900 staff in multiple locations across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Reporting to the Quality Manager, the Quality Engineer will partner with Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, Sales, Customer Service, and other cross-functional teams to identify and resolve quality issues, improve process capability, reduce the Cost of Poor Quality, and establish sustainable quality controls.
This role is well suited for an engineer who enjoys solving complex manufacturing problems, working directly with employees on the production floor, and building systems that prevent defects rather than simply identifying them after they occur.
Requirements
We are searching for a candidate with:
  • Bachelor's degree in Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Three or more years of quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with root-cause analysis, corrective action, process improvement, and quality-system documentation.
  • Working knowledge of quality tools such as 8D, 5 Whys, fishbone analysis, Pareto analysis, FMEA, control plans, statistical process control, and capability studies.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, and technical requirements.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project-management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively on the production floor and collaborate across departments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and quality-related data analysis and reporting tools.
  • Experience supporting an ISO 9001 implementation or working within an ISO 9001-certified manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, APQP, PPAP, MSA, GD&T, supplier quality management, or an electronic Quality Management System preferred.
  • Experience in machining, welding, fabrication, assembly, or other complex manufacturing processes preferred.
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer or Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
A typical day may include:
  • Support the development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the site's Quality Management System.
  • Assist with activities required to achieve and sustain ISO 9001 certification.
  • Develop and maintain quality procedures, work instructions, process documentation, control plans, inspection methods, sampling plans, and acceptance criteria.
  • Support internal and external quality audits and coordinate corrective actions resulting from audit findings.
  • Help ensure manufacturing processes and documentation comply with established quality standards and customer requirements.
  • Partner with Operations and Engineering to identify, investigate, and resolve manufacturing quality issues.
  • Lead structured root-cause analysis and corrective and preventive action activities.
  • Develop quality controls that prevent defects and reduce reliance on final inspection.
  • Analyze process capability, variation, scrap, rework, warranty claims, and other quality performance data.
  • Recommend and implement improvements that increase process capability, product reliability, and operational consistency.
  • Support the introduction of new products, processes, equipment, and engineering changes.
  • Apply statistical methods and quality tools to monitor and improve manufacturing performance.
  • Investigate customer complaints and coordinate timely containment, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions, including 8D reports when required.
  • Partner with Supply Chain and suppliers to resolve incoming material and component quality issues and support supplier corrective actions, audits, performance reviews, and improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement projects focused on reducing scrap, rework, warranty costs, and Cost of Poor Quality.
  • Support process standardization and the development of repeatable manufacturing practices.
  • Help establish meaningful quality metrics, dashboards, and reporting processes, and translate quality data into practical recommendations.
  • Provide quality-related training and coaching to supervisors, production employees, inspectors, and other team members.
  • Promote a proactive quality culture in which employees at every level take ownership of product and process quality.
  • Perform other duties and support quality initiatives as assigned.
Benefits of Working With Us
  • Competitive annual salary of $65,000-$80,000 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and in keeping with local legislation)
  • Medical/Dental/Vision/Life Insurance
  • HSA
  • 401(k) / Company Match / Non-Elective
  • Generous Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Plum Benefits
  • ... and more!
Position Details
  • Full time
  • Day shift, generally 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
  • Based in Quincy, IL
