What is a data engineer?

Data Engineers are IT professionals who design, construct, install, and maintain large-scale processing systems and other infrastructure for collecting, storing, and analyzing data. They build and optimize data pipelines and architectures that allow organizations to efficiently access and use data for business insights. Data Engineers work closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure that data is reliable, accessible, and secure. Their responsibilities often include working with databases, cloud platforms, and big data tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, data modeling, and programming languages such as Python or Java, often coupled with a relevant degree. Familiarity with ETL tools, big data frameworks (like Hadoop or Spark), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional data engineers apart. These skills and qualities are essential for building robust data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and supporting data-driven decision-making across organizations.

What does a data engineer do?

The job duties of a data engineer involve helping with the development of systems, software, and infrastructure used to process, store and analyze data. Your responsibilities in this career include working to install data management software. Your employer may expect you to perform maintenance and install updates to all software and systems that they use for data acquisition, management, and analysis. Data engineers also analyze existing data systems to find ways to improve efficiency and accessibility. You then suggest upgrades or changes based on your assessment.

How do data engineers typically collaborate with data scientists and analysts within an organization?

Data Engineers play a crucial role in ensuring that Data Scientists and Analysts have reliable, well-structured data for their projects. This collaboration often involves building and maintaining data pipelines, optimizing data storage solutions, and troubleshooting data quality issues. Regular communication and agile teamwork are common, with Data Engineers frequently participating in meetings to understand analytical requirements and adjust data processes accordingly. By working closely together, these teams can quickly iterate on data models and deliver actionable insights to drive business decisions.

What is the difference between Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

ย

Your Future Team

The Senior Associate, Data Engineer, reporting to the Managing Director, Software Engineering, builds and maintains the data pipelines and infrastructure that power business operations, analytics, and decision-making across Hightower. A Data Engineer builds or maintains data management systems, such as databases and data pipelines, that enable the company to access, store, and process data effectively to support decision-making and run the business. You will work closely with data scientists, analysts, and engineers across the firm to deliver reliable, well-modeled data into Snowflake and our operational data stores.

ย

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Build and maintain Snowflake and RDS data pipelines using Python, dbt, Mulesoft, Git, and GitHub Actions.
  • Partner with data scientists and analysts to model data in Snowflake, ensuring datasets are well-structured, documented, and ready for analytics and regulatory reporting.
  • Provide on-call and production support for pipeline failures, diagnosing issues and driving them to resolution with appropriate urgency.
  • Continuously improve data quality, reliability, and performance across the platform, identifying and addressing root causes rather than symptoms.
  • Collaborate across departments to understand business requirements and translate them into durable, maintainable engineering solutions.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation of data workflows

ย

What Youโ€™ll Bring

  • A bachelor's degree in information technology, data, artificial intelligence, or a related field.
  • 2-4 years of experience building and operating data pipelines in a professional environment.
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, Snowflake, dbt, and Mulesoft.
  • A curiosity-driven, self-directed approach โ€” comfortable digging into unfamiliar systems and figuring things out without hand-holding.
  • Strong collaboration skills with non-engineers, including analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders.
  • A sharp attention to detail and a data accuracy mindset โ€” you treat correctness as a first-class concern.

ย

What We Offer

  • Coverage on the first day of employment for medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid parental leave (16 weeks for primary caregiver and 8 weeks for secondary caregiver)
  • Motherโ€™s lounge onsite
  • Flexible PTO plan
  • In-office Monday through Thursday and work from home on Fridays
  • Free brand-new gym in the Chicago office
  • 401k matching plan
  • HSA employer contributions
  • Student loan assistance
  • Pet insurance
  • Base salary of $100,000-$115,000 plus discretionary bonus (exact base salary amount will be dependent on experience)

You are a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or possess other unrestricted U.S. work authorization and will not require sponsorship for U.S. work authorization now or anytime in the future.
