What is a data engineer?

Data Engineers are IT professionals who design, construct, install, and maintain large-scale processing systems and other infrastructure for collecting, storing, and analyzing data. They build and optimize data pipelines and architectures that allow organizations to efficiently access and use data for business insights. Data Engineers work closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure that data is reliable, accessible, and secure. Their responsibilities often include working with databases, cloud platforms, and big data tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, data modeling, and programming languages such as Python or Java, often coupled with a relevant degree. Familiarity with ETL tools, big data frameworks (like Hadoop or Spark), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional data engineers apart. These skills and qualities are essential for building robust data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and supporting data-driven decision-making across organizations.

What does a data engineer do?

The job duties of a data engineer involve helping with the development of systems, software, and infrastructure used to process, store and analyze data. Your responsibilities in this career include working to install data management software. Your employer may expect you to perform maintenance and install updates to all software and systems that they use for data acquisition, management, and analysis. Data engineers also analyze existing data systems to find ways to improve efficiency and accessibility. You then suggest upgrades or changes based on your assessment.

How do data engineers typically collaborate with data scientists and analysts within an organization?

Data Engineers play a crucial role in ensuring that Data Scientists and Analysts have reliable, well-structured data for their projects. This collaboration often involves building and maintaining data pipelines, optimizing data storage solutions, and troubleshooting data quality issues. Regular communication and agile teamwork are common, with Data Engineers frequently participating in meetings to understand analytical requirements and adjust data processes accordingly. By working closely together, these teams can quickly iterate on data models and deliver actionable insights to drive business decisions.

Working across Finance, Data Engineering, BI, and IT, the role translates defined reporting needs into practical, documented, and maintainable technical solutions. This position contributes directly to an ongoing effort to modernize and centralize financial reporting, reduce reliance on manual processes, and build a scalable, governed data foundation.
What's in it for you:

    • Tuition reimbursement
  • Employee discounts and additional perks
  • Certified Great Place to Work with 900+ lifetime workplace awards
  • Stability, growth, and long-term career development at a rapidly growing company

What you'll be doing:
  • SQL & Cloud Data Engineering
  • Build, maintain, and optimize SQL views, transformations, and pipelines that support financial reporting.
  • Assist in migrating FP&A datasets from on-premises systems to the Microsoft Fabric/Lakehouse cloud environment.
  • Power BI
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize Power BI datasets, semantic models, and reports/dashboards.
  • Apply best practices in DAX, modeling, and governance.
  • Excel Modernization
  • Help modernize and optimize complex Excel workbooks that rely on SQL, Power Query, and linked files.
  • Support recurring and ad hoc financial reporting for FP&A.
  • Data Quality, QC & Reconciliation
  • Perform quality control (QC) checks with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Perform data validation and reconciliation across systems and reports to ensure consistency.
  • Communicate, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues impacting reporting accuracy or performance.
  • Support Finance automation and reporting-process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with dashboard cleanup, report consolidation, and legacy process documentation.
  • Participate in testing and validation of new data sources, semantic models, and enterprise datasets.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to Finance report users.
  • Continue developing skills in SQL, Power BI, and the Microsoft Fabric platform.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

What we're looking for:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or related field.
  • 1+ years of experience in BI, data engineering, or analytics engineering, including hands-on work with SQL and Power BI.
  • Proficiency in SQL, including joins, aggregations, filtering logic, data transformations, and query troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of Power BI, including reports, semantic models, relationships, DAX, Power Query, and dashboard troubleshooting.
  • Strong Excel skills, including formulas, pivots, linked files, structured tables, Power Query, and workbook review.
  • Ability to investigate reporting discrepancies and trace issues across source data, SQL, Excel, Power BI, and report outputs.
  • Ability to understand and document financial and operational business rules.
  • Strong analytical, reconciliation, and problem-solving skills with attention to accuracy and completeness.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings clearly to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven Finance environment with multiple priorities.
  • Exposure to Microsoft Fabric, Lakehouse, Databricks, Azure, or similar cloud data platforms preferred.
  • Familiarity with Tabular Editor, DAX Studio, Python, Git, or Power Automate is a plus.
