What is a Data Engineer Project?

A Data Engineer Project refers to a specific initiative or assignment undertaken by data engineers to design, build, and maintain systems that gather, process, and store large volumes of data. These projects often involve creating data pipelines, integrating multiple data sources, ensuring data quality, and optimizing storage solutions for analytics or business intelligence. Such projects are critical for organizations to manage their data efficiently and enable data-driven decision-making. Data Engineer Projects can range from building a data warehouse to implementing real-time data streaming solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by Data Engineers working on project-based teams?

Data Engineers on project-based teams often encounter challenges such as integrating data from disparate sources, ensuring data quality and consistency, and meeting tight project deadlines. Collaboration with data scientists, analysts, and software engineers is crucial, requiring clear communication to translate business needs into robust data pipelines. Additionally, adapting to evolving technologies and toolsets is essential for the successful delivery of scalable and maintainable solutions.

What is the difference between Data Engineer Project vs Data Engineer?

Job description

Join Our Mission-Driven Energy Team!

We are an energy services company reinventing the way energy is used in buildings. We engineer energy upgrades, implement them, and track savings to ensure lasting impact. Our clients include many Fortune 500 companies, and our services span:

  • Engineering โ€” ASHRAE Level 1, 2, and 3 audits, retro-commissioning
  • Energy project implementation
  • Ongoing data analytics, fault detection, and diagnosis (FDD)

About the Role

We are seeking an entry-level Assistant Project Manager who is ready to take on big responsibilities in a growing, passionate team.

In this role, you will work on projects ranging from $50,000 to $4 million, supporting energy engineering and energy upgrades from start to finish โ€” including lighting, HVAC, controls, building envelope improvements, and compliance audits (ASHRAE Level I and II).

This is a field-forward role. Expect to be on-site at client buildings across the San Francisco Bay Area roughly 40% of the time, with occasional travel beyond the region.

Responsibilities

Project Engineer and Manager Support

  • Conduct site visits to assess and document existing building conditions
  • Collaborate with engineers to design high-value energy-saving measures
  • Develop project reports, including audit reports, scopes of work and bid packages
  • Coordinate trade subcontractors (lighting, mechanical/HVAC, and controls/BAS) from bid evaluation and selection through installation and on-site work
  • Help manage project budgets, schedules, and on-site execution
  • Support client communications, ensuring satisfaction and successful outcomes
  • Bridge between field realities and engineering design to meet or exceed energy saving goals
  • Own the trend-data workflow: pull and pre-process BAS trend data, run baseline regression models, and populate EcoCosm analysis templates
  • Perform on-site functional testing of AHUs, hot-water systems, and VAVs before and after repairs
  • Review sequences of operations and recommend optimal control strategies based on building needs, BAS capabilities, and ASHRAE controls guidelines
  • Maintain project documentation (test plans, meeting minutes, RFIs) and coordinate utility incentive programs such as AEP

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree preferably in STEM/Engineering related
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Customer-focused and professional demeanor
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Microsoft Project
  • Willingness and ability to travel regionally and nationally
  • Clean DMV record

Bonus Skills

  • Engineering background (mechanical, electrical, chemical, or related fields)
  • Familiarity with energy efficiency technologies and retro-commissioning (RCx)
  • Hands-on control system programming experience (beyond general BAS familiarity)
  • Knowledge of facilities maintenance practices and standards
  • Strong data entry and calculation skills, especially for energy modeling
  • Comfortable working on ladders, lifts, and in various indoor/outdoor conditions
  • Entry-level experience in energy engineering, commissioning, MEP, or building systems, including hands-on field/site work
  • Experience conducting building energy audits (ASHRAE Level I and II)
  • Working familiarity with HVAC controls and building automation systems (BAS), and comfort coordinating directly with controls subcontractors (Siemens Desigo/Insight and PPCL coding a plus)

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work on-site in commercial buildings, sometimes in tight, enclosed, or elevated spaces (e.g., mechanical rooms, rooftops, crawlspaces)
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8+ hours per day)
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds

What We Offer

  • Meaningful, mission-driven work
  • Competitive salary
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) plan
  • Paid holidays and paid time off (PTO)
