Responsibilities

The Data Engineers design, develop, and maintain data solutions for analytics, reporting, and integrations that support Lilly's Technology organization. As a Data Engineer, you will design and build data pipelines, optimize database designs, and work closely with data scientists, architects, and analysts to ensure data quality and accessibility, with the opportunity to solve real healthcare challenges through innovative technology. As part of Lilly's commitment to innovation, you will have the opportunity to build fluency with AI tools used across the business. We expect you to approach these tools with curiosity, apply critical thinking to AI-assisted work, and always prioritize accuracy, confidentiality, and ethical standards in how they use them. In this role, you will:

  • Design, build, and lead the implementation of data pipelines using modern technology platforms.
  • Demonstrate a desire to learn new business knowledge and technical skills.
  • Develop technical solutions that combine disparate information to create significant insights for business partners.
  • Operate with a quality mentality, always considering the impact of design decisions on the longโ€‘term support and maintenance of data pipelines.
  • Ensure data integrity, security, and privacy requirements are met.
Basic Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in and attending school, pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering/Technology, Information Technology, Security, or another relevant computer and technical program, with an expected graduation date of August 2027.
  • Completion of the 2026 Lilly technology summer internship or spring fellowship.
  • Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a fullโ€‘time basis.
  • Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role, including but not limited to F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, F-1 STEM OPT, J-1, H-1B, TN, O-1, E-3, H-1B1, or L-1.
Additional Skills & Preferences
  • Prior experience using AI tools (e.g., generative AI platforms, automation tools, or AI-assisted research/analytics tools) in an academic, project, or work setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently apply technology, techniques, and tools, and to understand and implement ETL/ELT processes, data quality checks, data models, and data pipeline designs.
  • Proficiency in a programming language such as Python or Java.
  • Experience with SQL and database technologies (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Leadership experience inside and/or outside the classroom.
  • Familiarity with big data tools (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, or similar).
  • Knowledge of cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure).
  • Familiarity with basic/intermediate data cleansing steps and transformations.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidateโ€™s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is $82,000 (Bachelors) - $100,000 (Masters) Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
