Job description

What We're Looking For

At HNTB, you can create a career that is meaningful to you while building communities that matter to all of us. For more than a century, we have been delivering solutions for some of the largest, most complex infrastructure projects across the country. With our historic growth, it is an exciting time to join our team of employee-owners.
We are seeking a Data Engineer III to partner with stakeholders and clients to define problems, design robust data solutions, and deliver scalable, production-grade pipelines that power smarter decision-making. The ideal candidate is a curious, collaborative problem-solver who is comfortable working across the data lifecycle, from ingestion and modeling to transformation, orchestration, and deployment. They navigate ambiguity with sound engineering judgment.
This is a unique opportunity to join our technology team at an early stage. As one of the first members of a growing data and technology practice, this role requires a high degree of ownership, adaptability, and initiative. You'll help shape how we build and operate data infrastructure, establish reusable tools and standards, and foster a culture of learning, transparency, and continuous improvement.
Success in this role means delivering reliable, well-architected data systems that help teams trust and understand their data, reducing friction between raw data and actionable insight, and driving practical business impact over time.

What You'll Do:

  • Leads the design and implementation of advanced data pipelines and architectures.
  • Defines project scope, technical approach, and success metrics in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Develops scalable solutions using cloud-based tools and distributed computing platforms.
  • Monitors pipeline performance and ensures reliability in production environments.
  • Provides technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Collaborates with data scientists and analysts to optimize data workflows.
  • Contributes to the development of best practices and reusable assets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field and 5 years of related experience, or,
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field and 4 years of related experience, or,
  • In lieu of education, 9 years of relevant experience.

What You'll Bring:

  • Advanced proficiency in SQL, Python, and cloud data services.
  • Experience with big data technologies (Spark, Hadoop, Kafka).
  • Data pipeline orchestration (Airflow, Luigi).
  • Data warehouse design and modeling (star/snowflake schema).
  • Data quality frameworks (dbt, Great Expectations).
  • Experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI).

What We Prefer:

  • Hands-on experience building and operating production data pipelines across multiple cloud providers such as: AWS, Microsoft/Azure, and GCP. This includes orchestration and ETL\ELT as well as the broader data stack: object storage and lakehouse layers, processing and data governance.
  • Experience in a start-up or early-stage environment as a flexible generalist. Comfortable wearing multiple hats, moving across the stack, and building from scratch amid ambiguity and minimal process, with the pragmatism to know when "good enough" beats "perfect."
  • Experience delivering data solutions in a highly regulated industry such as government, healthcare, or financial services, with an understanding of the compliance, security, and data governance demands those environments require.
  • Consulting or client-facing experience is a plus, ideally with comfort engaging directly with stakeholders, scoping problems, and delivering solutions across varied clients and contexts.
