Data Coder information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data coder?

To thrive as a Data Coder, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in information management or health information technology, often supported by certification such as Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). Familiarity with coding systems like ICD-10, CPT, and healthcare databases, as well as proficiency in data entry software, is typically required. Excellent organizational skills, integrity, and the ability to communicate clearly with other healthcare professionals help set top performers apart. These skills ensure accurate coding, compliance with regulations, and reliable data for billing, reporting, and patient care.

What are some common challenges data coders face when working with large and complex datasets?

Data Coders often encounter challenges such as inconsistent data formats, missing values, and ambiguous information when handling large and complex datasets. Ensuring data accuracy and maintaining consistency across different sources can be time-consuming and requires strong attention to detail. Effective communication with team members, such as data analysts and project managers, is also essential to clarify coding guidelines and resolve uncertainties. Proactively addressing these challenges helps Data Coders maintain high-quality datasets and contribute to reliable data analysis.

What is the difference between Data Coder vs Data Entry Clerk?

AspectData CoderData Entry Clerk
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma, coding certifications (e.g., ICD, CPT)High school diploma or equivalent
Work EnvironmentHealthcare, insurance, or data management settingsOffices, administrative settings
Employer & Industry UsageHospitals, insurance companies, healthcare providersBusinesses, government agencies, offices
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for data processing and coding accuracyCompared for data input speed and accuracy

Data Coders focus on translating medical or technical data into standardized codes, requiring specific certifications. Data Entry Clerks primarily input data into systems, emphasizing speed and accuracy. While both roles handle data, Data Coders require specialized knowledge, especially in healthcare coding, whereas Data Entry Clerks focus on general data input tasks.

How much do data coders make?

Data coders typically earn between $30,000 and $50,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced coders with specialized skills can earn higher salaries, especially if they work with advanced data management tools or certifications.

What does a data coder do?

A data coder is responsible for reviewing, categorizing, and coding data, often from surveys, interviews, or other sources, to ensure consistency and accuracy for analysis. They typically use coding manuals or software tools and may need attention to detail and knowledge of data management practices.

Job Description:

The Data Analyst is a strategic member of the Strategy & Analytics team, responsible for transforming data into actionable insights across multiple business functions. You will own the complete data lifecycle-from sourcing and ingesting data across systems to building robust data warehouses and delivering precision reporting solutions. This role combines data engineering expertise with analytical acumen, requiring you to work collaboratively with stakeholders while maintaining rigorous data governance standards. The ideal candidate brings 3-5 years of data analytics experience, holds a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or Engineering, and demonstrates proven AWS proficiency. You'll need strong problem-solving skills, expertise in mutual fund and market-based insurance products, and the ability to communicate complex methodologies clearly to non-technical audiences. Success requires balancing technical depth with independent judgment and collaborative teamwork while managing multiple priorities simultaneously.

What will you do?

  • Design, develop, maintain, and optimize enterprise-grade ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest, transform, and integrate data from multiple internal and external sources.

  • Build and manage scalable, reliable, and secure data platforms, databases, and data warehouses, ensuring high availability, performance, and data integrity.

  • Develop and implement robust data modeling, transformation frameworks, and semantic layers to standardize business data and support downstream analytics, reporting, and operational applications.

  • Own data integration processes, including data quality monitoring, validation, reconciliation, lineage tracking, and error handling, ensuring completeness and accuracy across systems.

  • Collaborate with business and technical stakeholders to translate data requirements into scalable data solutions, while driving best practices in architecture, governance, and performance optimization.

  • Design and maintain database schemas, indexing strategies, partitioning approaches, and query optimization techniques to support growing data volumes and evolving business needs.

  • Implement and support cloud-based data solutions using AWS services, including data storage, orchestration, and automation capabilities.

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the enterprise data ecosystem through automation, CI/CD deployment practices, infrastructure-as-code, and operational monitoring.

What do you need to succeed?

  • 3-5 years of Data Engineering experience developing and supporting enterprise ETL/ELT pipelines, data integration processes, and automated workflows.

  • Strong SQL and Database Expertise, including relational and non-relational database design, schema development, query optimization, indexing, and performance tuning.

  • Advanced Data Modeling Skills, with demonstrated experience building semantic, dimensional, and transformation models that standardize data across systems and business domains.

  • Hands-on Cloud Data Platform Experience, including AWS and modern data warehouse technologies such as Snowflake, Redshift, or similar platforms.

  • Strong Programming and Data Integration Capabilities, including Python and experience integrating data from multiple internal and external sources while ensuring data quality, governance, and reliability.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in Financial Services, Mutual Funds, ETFs, Segregated Funds, or Investment Operations.

  • Experience with orchestration and automation tools (Airflow, AWS Glue, Step Functions, etc.).

  • Experience with Salesforce or other CRM platforms.

  • Experience supporting CI/CD and DevOps practices for data platforms.

Unique Requirements:

  • Some travel may be required.

  • Extra hours may be required during the quarter-end reporting periods and during periods with high mutual fund trading volumes.

  • This role requires Reliability Status Clearance. In addition to a law enforcement inquiry and a credit check, as part of your application, the Government of Canada will ask if you lived or travelled outside of Canada for 6-consecutive months during the last 5 years, and you must account for all activities during this time.

What's in it for you?

  • Hybrid work environment

  • A friendly, collaborative, and inclusive culture

  • 15 vacation days per year

  • Flexible Benefits from the day you join to meet the needs of you and your family

  • Pension, stock and savings programs to help build and enhance your future financial security

  • The opportunity to move along a variety of career paths with amazing networking potential

  • Access to our Global Learning Centre, available 24/7 for your learning needs

  • Wellness programs that support the three pillars of your health - mental, physical and financial
