What is a data cleaning?

A Data Cleaning job involves identifying and correcting errors, inconsistencies, and inaccuracies in datasets to ensure high-quality data for analysis. This process includes removing duplicate records, filling in missing values, standardizing formats, and eliminating irrelevant or erroneous data. Data cleaning helps improve data accuracy, reliability, and usability for business intelligence, machine learning, and decision-making. Professionals in this role typically work with databases, spreadsheets, and data management tools to refine raw data into a structured and meaningful format.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in data cleaning, and why are they important?

To thrive in Data Cleaning, you need a strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and a solid understanding of data management practices, often supported by training or coursework in data science, statistics, or information technology. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Excel, SQL, Python (with libraries such as pandas), or specialized data cleaning software is highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving abilities, persistence, and effective communication are important soft skills for identifying and addressing data inconsistencies while collaborating with other team members. These skills are essential to ensure that datasets are accurate, reliable, and ready for analysis, leading to trustworthy business insights.

Can Chatgpt do data cleaning?

Data cleaning is a task performed by data analysts and data scientists, often using tools like Excel, Python, or specialized software. ChatGPT can assist by providing guidance, code snippets, or suggestions for cleaning data, but it cannot directly perform data cleaning tasks itself. Human oversight and technical skills are required to execute data cleaning processes effectively.

What are the most common challenges faced by professionals in data cleaning roles?

One of the biggest challenges in data cleaning is dealing with incomplete, inconsistent, or duplicate data from multiple sources, which often requires creative problem-solving and close attention to detail. Communicating with team members to clarify data definitions and intended use is also a frequent part of the job, as misinterpretations can lead to errors. Additionally, deadlines and large datasets can make the role fast-paced, so strong organizational skills and efficiency are important. However, overcoming these challenges offers valuable experience and plays a crucial role in ensuring the success of projects that depend on high-quality data.

Job description

Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Strathcona Resources Ltd. is one of North America's fastest growing pure play heavy oil producers with operations focused on thermal oil and enhanced oil recovery near the Cold Lake and Lloydminster regions of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Strathcona is committed to doing business the right way, guided by our core values: Integrity, Energy, and Intelligence. These values define who we are as a company, how we work together, and how we make decisions: We prioritize respect, accountability, and collaboration. That means everyone can shape and strengthen our culture and drive results in meaningful ways. Our people bring energy and curiosity to solve problems and deliver results. Be part of a team where performance, collaboration, and innovation come together to drive success.

We are seeking a skilled Contract Data Analyst to join our Analytics team in Calgary for an 18-month term. Reporting to the Team Lead, Analytics, you will work closely with internal stakeholders and our analytics team to deliver high-quality, consistent, and scalable data products across multiple platforms. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise in Databricks and Tableau, paired with a solid understanding of upstream and corporate oil and gas data.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and maintain Tableau dashboards and other data products to support business needs across various teams, ensuring established best practices and data governance

  • Partner with business stakeholders to understand requirements, translate them into effective visual analytics, and iterate based on feedback

  • Collaborate closely with internal data and analytics team members to ensure consistency, scalability, and maintainability of solutions

  • Support dashboard testing, validation, documentation, and knowledge transfer as required

  • Determine appropriate joins, transformations, and cleaning steps required to prepare raw data for analytics use cases

Qualifications:

  • Strong working knowledge of Databricks, or other data lake platforms, including querying and working with curated and raw datasets

  • Experience working with enterprise data across multiple functional domains

  • Proven experience developing dashboards in Tableau

  • Experience designing solutions for spreadsheet inputs and writeback or feedback loops within reporting workflows

  • Oil and gas industry experience; experience with Maximo or similar enterprise asset/work management systems is considered an asset.

  • Experience working within governed analytics environments and following established BI standards

  • Experience supporting self-service analytics initiatives

  • Understanding of data lake concepts

  • Demonstrated ability to work with raw data, assess data quality, and independently determine how to join and clean datasets

Great things aren't done by one person, they're done by a team.

We believe meaningful results come from people with unwavering commitment to integrity, energy, and intelligence - how we show up matters just as much as what we deliver. We value our work, our communities, and our commitments - but most of all, we value the team of people who make what we do possible.

Apply to Strathcona

If you have what it takes to be a great Strathcona team member, we want to hear from you. We appreciate all interest in this opportunity but only those selected to advance through the process will be contacted.
