Data Center Project Architect information

What does a data center project architect do?

A Data Center Project Architect is responsible for designing and overseeing the construction of data centers, ensuring that these facilities meet the necessary requirements for security, efficiency, and reliability. They collaborate with engineers, contractors, and clients to develop architectural plans that support complex IT infrastructure and cooling systems. Their role includes ensuring the project complies with industry standards, safety codes, and sustainability practices while delivering projects on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data center project architect?

To thrive as a Data Center Project Architect, you need expertise in architectural design, building codes, and data center infrastructure, typically backed by a professional degree in architecture and relevant licensure. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM systems, as well as knowledge of industry standards like Uptime Institute or LEED certifications, is crucial. Strong project management, problem-solving, and communication skills set candidates apart in coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These capabilities ensure the delivery of reliable, efficient, and scalable data center environments that meet client and operational requirements.

What is the difference between Data Center Project Architect vs Data Center Design Engineer?

AspectData Center Project ArchitectData Center Design Engineer
CredentialsArchitect license, certifications in data center designEngineering degree, certifications in electrical or mechanical engineering
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, architecture firms, client consultationsEngineering firms, technical design teams, construction sites
Industry UsageInvolved in overall project design, planning, and coordinationFocuses on technical design details, systems integration, and specifications

While both roles are essential in data center projects, the Data Center Project Architect oversees the overall design and project coordination, ensuring compliance with client needs and regulations. The Data Center Design Engineer concentrates on technical system design, engineering calculations, and system integration. Together, they collaborate to deliver efficient, reliable data center facilities.

What are some common challenges faced by data center project architects during large-scale projects?

Data Center Project Architects often encounter challenges such as coordinating between multiple stakeholders, managing strict timelines, and ensuring compliance with evolving industry standards. Balancing client requirements with technical feasibility can be complex, especially when integrating new technologies or sustainability measures. Effective communication, attention to detail, and proactive risk management are essential to successfully navigate these challenges and deliver projects on time and within budget.

Job description

Job Summary:
Ursus, Inc. is seeking a Data Center Project Architect IV to design and build internal web applications and architect data solutions for metrology configurations. The role involves developing data lakes, serverless backend services, and analytics dashboards while ensuring data governance and collaborating with engineering teams.
Responsibilities:
• Design and build internal web applications (React/TypeScript, AWS-hosted) for creating and managing metrology configurations that define what is measured, where, and how across programs and vendor sites.
• Architect and deploy an S3-based data lake with automated folder structure generation, schema validation, and event-driven processing pipelines.
• Build serverless backend services (API Gateway + Lambda) for configuration CRUD, data ingestion, pass/fail evaluation against spec limits, and summary aggregation.
• Develop integration adapters for optical tester outputs (CSV, key-value text, proprietary formats) into structured, queryable storage.
• Design and deploy internal analytics dashboards: process capability, yield trending, GRR analysis, SPC monitoring, and cross-site measurement correlation.
• Implement AI agent workflows for automated analysis: GRR validation, build summaries, and upstream/downstream spec optimization.
• Establish data governance: role-based access controls (vendor-scoped editing), schema versioning, change traceability, and audit logging.
• Partner with optical metrology engineers and external manufacturing partners to translate measurement workflows and domain requirements into system architecture.
• Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with design consultants. Anticipated travel not to exceed 15%.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field.
• 5+ years of experience building full-stack web applications (React/TypeScript frontend + cloud backend).
• 5+ years experience with AWS services: S3, Lambda, API Gateway, CloudFront, DynamoDB, Athena, or equivalent cloud data stack.
• 5+ years of experience designing data pipelines and data models for manufacturing, quality, or IoT systems.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL for data processing, transformation, and analysis.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform).
• Strong communication skills - ability to translate between hardware engineering domain experts and software architecture.
Preferred:
• M.S. in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field.
• Experience with statistical process control (SPC), GRR methodology, or metrology/quality data systems.
• Familiarity with MES implementations or industrial data acquisition systems.
• Background in display/optical metrology or hardware quality systems.
• Experience with AI/ML agent frameworks or tool-integration patterns for connecting analysis workflows to structured data.
