Job description

Facility Manager – Data Center Operations

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Facility Manager to oversee the operation, maintenance, and reliability of a mission-critical data center facility and campus environment. This role is responsible for ensuring continuous uptime of all mechanical, electrical, environmental, and infrastructure systems while leading a team of technicians, engineers, and contractors.

The Facility Manager serves as the primary site leader for facility operations, customer support, vendor management, maintenance planning, budgeting, and compliance. This individual will drive operational excellence, maintain industry best practices, and ensure a safe, secure, and highly available data center environment.

Reporting Relationship: Reports directly to the Director or Vice President of Operations.

Key Responsibilities

Facility Operations & Reliability

  • Maintain 100% uptime and availability within a critical colocation data center environment.
  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of all facility infrastructure, including:
    • Electrical distribution systems
    • Mechanical systems
    • Industrial HVAC equipment
    • Plumbing systems
    • Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS)
  • Monitor and optimize facility performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Manage preventative maintenance programs and asset lifecycle planning.
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop scopes of work for repairs, upgrades, and maintenance activities.
  • Perform root cause analysis on system failures and implement corrective actions and process improvements.

Team Leadership

  • Lead and supervise Data Center Support Technicians, Building Engineers, and contractors.
  • Develop employee schedules, training programs, and professional growth plans.
  • Ensure team readiness to support 24x7x365 mission-critical operations.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence.

Customer & Vendor Management

  • Serve as a key point of contact for customers and ensure exceptional service delivery.
  • Manage vendor relationships, service contracts, and maintenance agreements.
  • Coordinate and oversee work performed by third-party contractors.
  • Communicate technical information effectively to customers, vendors, and executive leadership.

Financial & Administrative Management

  • Assist in developing and managing operational budgets.
  • Review, code, approve, and process site accounts payable activities.
  • Review customer billing and facility-related charges as required.
  • Estimate labor, materials, and project costs for repairs and capital improvements.
  • Maintain facility drawings, documentation, and space planning records.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations, building codes, and company policies.
  • Maintain maintenance schedules, operating procedures, and asset tracking systems.
  • Manage work order systems and facility management software.
  • Support physical security and emergency preparedness initiatives.

On-Call Support

  • Participate in a 24x7x365 on-call rotation to support critical facility operations.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Industry certifications related to data center operations, facilities management, electrical systems, HVAC, or building automation are highly preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in a data center environment.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing commercial facility operations and critical building systems.
  • Experience implementing and managing Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS).
  • Proven experience managing teams, contractors, and vendor relationships.
