As Controls Engineer, Design and Operations, you will be a key member of the team responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the controls systems for our data centers. As Controls Engineer, Design & Operations, you will be responsible for driving quality cradle-to-grave lifecycle of data center controls systems/solutions from design through end of life (EOL). Additionally, you will be engaged in commissioning, deployment, and maintenance further optimizing the controls systems that operate our data centers. This includes basic programming and troubleshooting various control systems, including HVAC, electrical, and fire suppression systems. You will work under the supervision of a Senior Controls Engineer and collaborate with the Central Operations (Site Ops, Reliability Engineering etc.) team to ensure that all systems operate efficiently and meet our high standards for up-time and reliability.

This position is for one of the following markets: Phoenix, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta or San Antonio. Travel is expected to be between 20-30% to regional data center sites across the U.S. as needed. Additional travel may be necessary to support new market builds and supplier collaboration.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and delivery of standards and specifications such as basis of design, OPRs, SOOs, point-and-alert lists, graphics, dashboards, reporting, training, and SoW documentation to ensure data center design requirements are maintained.
  • Collaborate with multiple stakeholders including internal partners such as Design and Construction, Quality, Safety, and Operations as well as external partners including Engineers of Record (EoR), general contractors, controls vendors, and equipment vendors to deliver data center capacity safely, on time, within budget, and of high quality. Participate in project health reviews.
  • Support site operations to troubleshoot operational issues, maintenance of existing data center control systems, RCAs, and retrofits.
  • Ensure PLC systems are designed to meet the specific requirements of our data centers and are properly installed, configured, monitored, and maintained.
  • Act as the bridge between design consultants, BMS vendors, and IT departments to ensure seamless and reliable Building Management System (BMS) implementation in both new data center deployments and retrofit projects. Oversee diagram and screen development for controls, network, BMS, EPMS, workflows, and processes.
  • Support Site Ops Controls Subject Matter Experts (cSME).
  • Work with our contractors and vendors to develop intelligent control systems and ensure optimal electrical and mechanical performance.
  • Propose strategies to optimize the interplay of electrical and mechanical systems for enhanced data center performance and stability.
  • Ensure compliance with tenant lease requirements and iterate specifications and standards to align with lease requirements.
  • With guidance from a Sr Engineer, work projects through concept, schematic, design development, construction documents, construction administration and turn-over as controls technical domain support on greenfield and retrofits projects.
  • Lead quality approval, process control, product evaluation, vendor proposals, automated testing support, and software review.
  • Prepare and issue Request for Proposals (RFP), input award recommendations, manage and administer project/program level contracts, review change cost proposals, value engineering proposals, invoices, shop drawings, submittals, requests for information, reports/audits/studies and other design related deliverables.
  • Learn and apply basic programming and configuration of control systems to standards and methods for processes, control logic and sequences, testing, evaluation, and integration.
  • Collaborate and engage with the Commissioning Team, with focus on area walk downs, critical benchmarks, systems integration and operation, issue resolution, commissioning script review and implementation, and providing technical support on design and operational related matters.
  • Drive project schedules while working closely with design and construction to ensure milestones and completion dates are on track. Drive opportunities to compress schedules proactively and in response to business needs
  • Travel to datacenter sites for engineering studies, mechanical/electrical systems audits, startup testing, and full commissioning, as required. Travel to various equipment and bench testing sites, as well as remotely located design working sessions.
  • Occasionally, work outside of normal working hours to respond on an as-needed basis to emergencies and site events.
  • Participate in data center site visits to support and facilitate inspections, testing, and hands-on learning.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of communication protocols, including Modbus, BACnet, MQTT, OPC
  • Understanding of PLC programming language, architecture, and configuration.
  • Experience developing and interpreting sequence of operations (SOO).
  • 3+ years combined experience maintenance, design, and deployment of critical environment controls systems.
  • Some experience in the design of Controls and Monitoring solution projects.
  • Project management experience focused on data center or critical environments.
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related engineering degrees or five (5) years of related experience in professional environments.
  • Experience and familiarity in all aspects of engineering documentation, including control drawings, BoMs, GUI/functional specs, and sequences of operations.
  • Experience with the use and programming of software in building management systems.
  • Experience with the use and programming of electrical power monitoring systems (Schneider, Eaton preferred).
  • Knowledge of Data Center Facilities Infrastructure and operation (PDU, UPS, Generators, etc.)
  • Proficiency in computer applications such as SQL, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Project.
  • Direct experience with design or construction administration of electrical distribution systems ranging from low to high voltage.
  • Direct experience with delivering modular data centers design projects, including procurement and commissioning of facilities.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, environmental codes, building codes and safety standards including International Building Code
  • Ability to communicate complex technical issues to senior leadership or non-engineers, develop basic business case financial projections and create performance metrics.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical theory, proficient in calculations for single and 3-phase circuits, interpreting intricate electrical and control diagrams, understanding of fluid dynamics.

  • Proficient with Ignition, ideally with Core Certification

  • Experience leading teams of 2-5 personnel in a critical environment
