Job description

Structured Cabling Technician – Lead Installer

Contract-to-Hire | On-Site | Hyperscale Data Center Build

Approximate start date: 2nd week of September to 4th week of September

Salary Range: $30 to $40 Per Hour

About Startech Networks

Startech Networks Inc. (STN) is a network infrastructure services provider specializing in hyperscale data center deployment. We deliver structured cabling, rack & stack, and complete network build-outs for major hyperscale operators and their prime contractors, and we operate large field crews across greenfield, colocation, and campus environments.

Role Overview

Startech is hiring approximately 40 experienced Structured Cabling Technicians to join our current hyperscale data center build. This is a hands-on installer role for candidates with a full lead-installer skill set — capable of executing every phase of the install from cable reel setup through final dressing, with minimal supervision. You will work in 2-person crews on high-density fiber trunk pulls (MPO, LC), copper Ethernet runs, and rack & stack activities.

Engagement Type

This is a contract-to-hire engagement. The role begins as a contract assignment on our current data center build project. Based on performance — quality of work, safety record, reliability, teamwork, and leadership — top performers will be offered full-time permanent positions with Startech Networks and rolled into our ongoing hyperscale project pipeline. Compensation, benefits, and direct-hire terms are discussed with candidates who advance through the initial contract phase.

Key Responsibilities

•           Set up cable jacks and reels for MPO, LC, and copper Ethernet cable pulls, including large-diameter reels for 144F and 288F trunks.

•           Execute overhead cable pulls through ladder rack, cable tray, sleeves, and pass-throughs; manage bend radius, pulling tension, and slack loops per manufacturer spec.

•           Operate scissor lifts and rolling scaffolds safely at 12–15 ft ceiling heights; complete overhead dressing and cable management with proper Velcro and hook-and-loop strapping.

•           Install and route cable through pass-through sleeves between rooms, verifying fire-stop and grommet integrity where applicable.

•           Perform patch and label work on both cable ends — MPO and LC termination, connector cleaning (Sticklers, US Conec, Fluke Quick Clean), inspection, and full labeling to project spec.

•           Handle Cat6 / Cat6A UTP Ethernet installations including cable pulls, jack termination, and Cat6/6A certification hand-off.

•           Assist rack & stack activities — cabinet roll-in, leveling, PDU installation, ground bond, and initial cable management inside the rack.

•           Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work zone; follow all daily JHAs and toolbox talks.

•           Interface with test technicians to hand off cable segments for Tier 1 acceptance; support troubleshooting of failed connectors.

•           Mentor junior installers on proper technique, tool handling, and quality standards.

•           Maintain assigned tools and consumables; escalate reorder needs to the foreman.

Required Qualifications

•           Minimum 3 years of hands-on structured cabling experience with progressively increasing responsibility.

•           Demonstrated lead-installer capability: able to execute a full install package (pull, route, terminate, label, dress) with minimal supervision.

•           Hands-on experience with cable reel handling and jack setup for medium and large fiber trunks.

•           Certified for scissor lift and aerial lift operation (OSHA-compliant training documentation required).

•           OSHA 10 certification (OSHA 30 preferred).

•           Experience with pass-through installations, fire-stop coordination, and cable tray/ladder rack routing.

•           Working knowledge of MPO and LC connector types, cleaning tools, and inspection scopes.

•           Ability to read cable schedules, elevation drawings, port maps, and BOM documentation.

•           Physical ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly, climb ladders and lifts, and work overhead for extended periods.

•           Reliable transportation to site and consistent attendance record.

•           Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

•           BICSI Installer 1 (INST1) or Installer 2 – Copper (INST2-C) certification.

•           Prior hyperscale data center project experience.

•           Familiarity with structured cabling standards (TIA-568, TIA-942).

•           Experience with fiber cleaning and inspection tools (Sticklers CleanClicker, Fluke Fiber Inspection Scope, Viavi FBP).

•           Comfortable using test equipment for basic continuity checks (VFL, OLTS).

•           Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

Physical Requirements

•           Ability to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly throughout the shift.

•           Extended standing, walking, climbing ladders and scissor lifts, and working overhead at 12–15 ft heights.

•           Manual dexterity for connector work in tight spaces (behind racks, in overhead trays).

•           Ability to work extended shifts (up to 10 hours) in a temperature-controlled but active data center environment.

•           Ability to wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, hi-vis vest, and fall protection harness.

Position Details

•           Reports To: Working Foreman

•           Works With: 1 partner in a 2-person crew (pull) or as part of larger patch/dressing team

•           Work Environment: Active data center construction; overhead and floor-level structured cabling work

•           Schedule: On-site during current project window; extended hours possible during critical phases
