Overview

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for compiling, processing, and maintaining employee information records, pay, and timekeeping data to ensure payroll records are up-to-date and employees are paid accurately and in a timely manner. In addition, the incumbent processes taxes and other deductions and provides timely responses and accurate resolution to inquiries and issues from employees, management, and outside parties.

Hiring Range: $19.50-$25.00 starting per hour based on experience with career path options.


Responsibilities

  • Utilizes payroll software to input payroll data along with timekeeping information for employees in a timely manner to ensure the accurate completion and processing of payroll.
  • Processes and maintains employee data associated with events, changes, and terminations including but not limited to new hires, transfers, promotions, pay changes, terminations, etc.
  • Maintains current knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll administration and wage garnishment laws, regulations, and payroll best practices.
  • Provides support to employees across the organization and assists in the investigation, analysis, and resolution of payroll discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Oversees and maintains up-to-date supporting documentation and confidential employee folders, files pertinent data related to time and compensation matters.
  • Establishes effective working relationships with Home Office departments and business teams across the organization.
  • Participates in training and other learning opportunities to expand knowledge of the company, products, sales, and services and performs any other duties needed to help drive our vision, fulfill our mission, and/or abide by our core values.

Payroll Specialist I: Has 1-3 years of progressively complex experience in the payroll administration and accounting fields. Demonstrates basic knowledge of Casella’s Payroll Administration practices and services in the waste industry. Possesses solid working accounting skills. Effectively manages assigned datasets and projects, including continued processing and routine maintenance, only asking for assistance or additional insight when needed.

Payroll Specialist II: Has 3-5 years of progressively complex experience in the payroll administration and accounting fields. Demonstrates a solid understanding of Casella’s Payroll Administration practices and services in the waste industry. Possesses comprehensive accounting skills. Prepares reports, completes data entry, and supports managers in the field by assisting in ad hoc requests and leading problem-solving. Demonstrates the ability to mentor and train other Payroll Administration staff. Builds relationships at various levels throughout Casella.

Payroll Specialist Sr.: Has 5+ years of progressively complex experience in the payroll administration and accounting fields. Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of Casella’s Payroll Administration practices and services in the waste industry. Possesses expert accounting skills. Highly skilled in communicating complex information in an understandable manner and expertly synthesizes data for system input and maintenance. Proficient in payroll administration operations and able to work independently. Provides thorough mentoring and training to Payroll Administration staff. Has built strong relationships within the Payroll Administration Team and across various divisions and lines of business in Casella.


Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a high school diploma, and a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in a collaborative environment. Well-developed listening, communication, problem-solving, technical, and analytical skills along with demonstrated proficiency with MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook) and HR/PY database programs are required.

Although not required, an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in business or other related field, 1-2 years of payroll administration experience, and previous experience using ADP Workforce Now or other payroll applications are preferred.
